How did I miss this? The light is super-duper and the BG is delicious!

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

The band-tailed pigeon (Patagioenas fasciata) is the only pigeon that is native to the Pacific Northwest.

These shots are with a 7D2 and 500/4 II, handheld. For those in the Portland metro area, the most reliable place in/around the city to see band-tailed pigeons in my experience is at Koll Wetlands in Beaverton in the trees next to the tennis court at 45.456719, -122.793027.

As an interesting aside, it is the closest extant relative to the passenger pigeon, and has been considered as a possible means to bring back the passenger pigeon using DNA stored from the last living specimen in the early 20th century.

Hope you like them!

This is one of a sequence of images of this Kingfisher I took a few weeks ago at Low Barns wildlife refuge, Durham (N E England). I remember noticing that the bird turned his head at one point but until I looked at the full sized image I didn't realise it was because a Wasp was flying very close to him. He didn't seem too bothered, just curious.
Note this was a distant bird and the image is a small part of a 100% crop:
