With the release of the 5D IV, the 5D III prices are kind of plummeting. I understand the drop in price after a new release, but what was selling for $2,200 2 weeks ago are now selling for as low as $1,500.00 in great condition with clicks around 24k. I expected them to fall in price, but not this far and so fast. I picked up a 5D IV and thought about letting my 5D3 go, but at these prices, I'm thinking about keeping it. It's a fantastic body with outstanding performance. In my mind, I sort of put the 5D3 in the category as the original 5D.
IMHO, the 5D3 does what it does very well, and will continue to do so for years to come.

Canon is still selling them new for $2,499, and $2,099 refurbed.

Are people just dropping the prices low just to get rid of them fast and off-set the price of the 5D IV? I peruse the KEH.com website sometimes, and they offer a little over half the value of the body in the marketplace if you want to sell it to them. I've purchased some gear from them, and it's always been in immaculate condition.
Like I said earlier, I'll be keeping mine as a second body. It really is just that good vs letting it go for seriously low prices.

I'm thinking along similar lines.

Recently sold my 5D2 which was a backup body, plus I was using it for time lapse. Was tempted to sell the Mark III for the new IV, but didn't want to be an early adopter. So once the price on the IV starts to ease, I'll likely get one and keep the III as backup, plus I do plan to get into TL alot more, so that will be relegated to the older body.

Like you say, the III is still a great and capable camera with alot of life left.

Yeah, I understand that part. I'm just amazed and how far down the price of a low-count 5D3 has gone. I don't remember a price falling this fast in the past, but then to be honest, I don't think I ever really watched the price drops closely after a new release. In some aspects, they are actually losing money. As you say though, everyone is going to want the newest, which means sacrificing the previous.

Within a couple of days I sold my 5dIII with 26,000 clicks on it, the battery grip, extra battery, charger, strap, all unopened CDs/cables/user manual, and a 32gb memory card for $2000.00, including overnight shipping. I took care of it, kept it clean, never abused it, and made sure it was on its way to the new owner in the best condition I could possibly get it in before it left my hands. I think I got kind of lucky to get it sold at that price that quickly because I too have seen prices dramatically falling over the last few days. I suspect that in a matter of months people will practically be giving theirs away. $1500.00 is a great price for an amazing camera (5DIII).

Guilty. Luckily I have a side job/hobby that indirectly pays for all of my photography equipment that I use during said job/hobby. I'm that guy that sucks really badly at photography but has all the toys that most people want. Sorry.

The used prices aren't that surprising. For those of us that have been around many releases, I think the prices are about where one would expect.

A month ago, I had posted this below, predicting prices in the $1500-1700 range. I am not a fortune-teller, this was based on experience for the 1D4, 1DX, 5D3, 7D2, etc releases. The prices will settle upwards a bit in a few weeks as the used market dries up a bit.

I don't need to sell mine, but it bothers me that great gear is just sitting in a pelican case, too. I would rather see it find a new home and be used. I'll watch the market for a while and see where it settles, then probably put it out there.

You and I think alike, it appears. I stopped using my 5D3 at the start of the year, and it was gathering dust. Great camera, but I knew that the 5D4 was right around the corner, once the 80D was announced, so I put it up for sale, $2K on Amazon. If I cannot get the funds freed up for the 5D4, I might pick up a 5D3 again at the lower prices.

You have a plan. That puts you a step or two in front of me.

Prices are falling pretty quick because its a substantial update. You have at least 1.5 stops, Huge DR, and a substantial update to the AF systems.

Its a major update for canon shooters and the price did not go up and in the 1Dx line it went down $500.00 from previous update

old sensors just got very dated.
