I get the frequency separation for the differences in shadows and fixing some skin problems, but not with the color itself. Not sure if there's a technical range to be within or not for what looks good. I've gotten better just based on doing more and more but it's still eyeball for the most part.

Mainly adjusted vibrance, curves, and white balance in LR and then sharpened, skin frequency separation, contoured with dodge/burn, brightened eyes, darkened background, and not that it needed to be done I stamped in more of that colorful bokeh Husband & Wife Team / Tony & Karissa / flickr

When you press Ctrl, Shift,Alt ,E together on you keyboard, it make an image of all the visible layers . This is called stamping , pretty simple..
