Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM

I was walking the beach yesterday to shoot the sunset and happened to catch a handful of Navy rescue training exercises. Pretty cool!

As a sidenote: I really love using this lens on my 5dIII compared to my 7dII. I think I must need to do some MFA adjustment with my 7dII, because I never seem to get such sharp and crisp results like I do on the 5d or like I used to get with my 70-300L on the 7d. How are you folks setting up to MFA a longer lens like this?

I did find that the 100-400 II was overly "sensitive" on my 7D2. MFA seemed very touchy. I often felt like I needed different MFA one day than I did another day. I got to the point where, when I went to shoot, I would MFA the lens before I started shooting (I would simply select a tree trunk or a sign and MFA on that). I did get lots of good shots with the lens/camera combo, but it was a bit of a struggle to do so.

About 6 weeks ago, I traded the 7D2 and some other stuff to get a 1DX2. What a difference! I've taken 5000 shots with the 1DX2 + 100-400 II. I haven't had to do any MFA. The combination "just works" and it's reliable every time. It sounds like that's what you're seeing with your 5D3. I don't know why I struggled a bit with the 7D2. Nor do I know why the 1DX2 works so much better. But I thought I would note that my experience is similar to yours.

The 7DII did have focusing issue after it's release (whether or not Canon wanted to admit it!) I went through 3 bodies before I got one that didn't need lots of macro adjustments on every lens in my bag. I still can't get this 3rd body to play nice with my Tamron 150-600mm but, it's a lens I really don't use any longer since I picked up the 100-400II.

Great shots, I am really torn between 70-200 F4 or a 100-400 L Lens, but looking at your pics and the sharpness I think I am leaning towards the latter
