I have the original ultrasonic 24-105 L IS. Came with the 6D. While I was ok with it it never quite reached my expectations, I was a little disapointed with my first L lens. A few weeks ago I had the local Canon workshop 'match' the lens and camera as well as service the 6D. ( my tech expertise in that area is rated at around -11 :) )While it wasn't cheap the results have been truly astounding. My van pic back a bit was shot at wide open and that is quite a severe crop but the signage on the left is easily read and you can see the weave of the blanket on which I focused. The only problem with it I find is I would like a longer reach. Image quality is truly, very very good, and focus has certainly speeded up. I have seen reports that the usm version is at least equally as good.

I like that bridge pic Eric! :)

Thanks Chris! Glad to hear that you are getting better results since the 'matching' was done. I have to admit after this shot and a couple of others on my initial outing with it, I wasn't overly excited. However, after having getting acquainted with it on the camera for a bit, I am much happier with the results. I have to admit to being very curious to the new version of this lens though. Unfortunately, my daughters college tuition is putting a damper on any purchases for the next 6-8 months when she finishes up:-(

Wow, I guess I never considered the 6D or the 24-105 as not great gear. To each their own I suppose.

I think it's great gear and own and use this combo. I was being facetious. For some on this forum, the only camera even worth considering is the 5DIII. If you look through the forum, you get, lousy auto focus, slow frame rate, etc. On the lens, mediocre sharpness, poor edge performance, etc. I love my 6D and 24-105. But, to each their own I suppose.

As the response was originally made to my post, that is the way I interpreted it. Agree with your comments...don't know why the 24-105 gets a bad rap by some. If they don't have a body with MFA, it may account for lack of sharpness.

Or, they never owned the combination but read on the internet, where everybody is an expert.

I was thinking along the lines of the Sigma ART lenses vs Canon L lenses. The Sigma 35mm and 50mm ART are known for slow and sometimes inaccurate focus. The L series tend to focus quicker and more accurately.

The 6D/70-200 2.8 combo seems to be a match made in heaven. I can actually see the veins in the wings on the monarch. I really think I am going to like taking photos with this combo.
