This may be of interest to anyone looking for more reach but worried about losing image quality. The shot below was taken with the 1DmkIV + 300mm f/2.8 IS II + 2xTCIII from a distance of about 100 yds hand held. It's a relatively light weight combination (compared to carrying round a 500mm or 600mm prime lens anyway) and I've never had any complaints about the image quality. Larger versions on Flickr:

Agree totally, the 300 2.8ii with the 2x iii is a great lighter weight combo, that quickly becomes a f4/420mm if the Tx is swapped for the 1.4 and then a lightning fast native 300 for when the light fades. I loved this lens with my 1DM4, however that has gone and now has been replaced with a 5DM4 - which I must say is proving very capable with the 300 and the 300/1.4 - yet to try the 300/2x but every indication is that it will be great too.

I will also likely upgrade to the 5D mk IV at some point. The new 1 series has too much emphasis on video (which I've no interest in) and not much in the way of camera upgrades. If prices go the way they have over the past few years the 5D mk IV will come down to not much more than half what the 1DxII lists at, might treat myself then.

Talking of 300mm f2.8 lenses... Took my Sigma 120-300 OS out tonight because I knew they were back. The skimmers two years ago were literally responsible for me moving from a 7D to a good used 1D MKIV. Best move I ever made. They nest every year on the same small island, and the female is certainly showing signs of nesting. Fingers crossed. 1 Chick last year but didn't make it. So hopefully get some decent skimming shots in the early morning over the next days.
