Looking to upgrade to 1DX II, but which backup goes?

I do kids sports, seniors, family, just about what ever anyone needs. Bread and butter is kids T&I and seniors. My favorite is live sports i.e. lacrosse and football. I just don't make any money on the live sports, I do it for fun. I do have a budget for a new 1dx II for a bout 5500.00, there's a couple around for that price. My arsonal is as follows: 5D3, 7D, 70-200 2.8 IS Mk1, 24-70 MkII, 85 1.8, 50 1.4 (the last two haven't seen light of day in over a year) and 1.4 ext Mk1. I would like to upgrade to 70-200 MkII to go along with 1DX. So I can sell the 70-200 Mk1 and 5D3 or 7D to help off set cost. My dilemma is which to get rid of, the 5D3 or the 7D. For the amount of work I do, the work load gets split about 50/50 between those body's. I realize the 1DX can outperform both those. So which should I keep and a backup and which goes on the selling block? Thanks, Dave

7D goes... You'll never shoot it again for sports & 5D3 covers all your other needs.

Agreed. I'd drop the 7D. Unless you need a backup, I'd actually drop both.

Agree. I would get rid of the 7D. Save your money, get a 1Dx as a backup, and get rid of the 5D3.

So I think the 7D makes sense to drop initially, unless you're used to 200mm on APS-C. Seems that's the longest reach you have. But if you're fine at 200mm on full frame for all the sports, then you're good to go. The downside is that you're not going to get much for a 7D. $400~500 depending on condition and shutter count. While that is something, that kind of money return makes you have to stop and think about whether it's worth selling or if it's better to keep it as a backup camera, since it's not tieing up a bunch of funds by sitting on the shelf as a backup compared to something worth three or four times the amount sitting on a shelf as a backup. Worth considering in that way.

Once you get the 1DXII you probably won't do much with the 5D3. Hardly not much reason to unless you're doing something and need a dslr without a grip suddenly for some reason. Also 5D3's are going to get cheaper and cheaper with 5D4 on the market, so now is a good time to sell it before it's used price drops further. The 5D3 could nearly trade out for a 70-200 F2.8L II so that you basically trade for it essentially, as they're near the same worth at this point on the used market, if you go used.

Personally though, I'd be looking at a 300 F2.8L at this point, second hand. Awesome sports lens for what you're shooting. I'd rather have that, over a 70-200. And then just keep a 24-105 or something on a 2nd camera in case the action gets too close for the compositions you want.

With your budget, I'd go for a 1DX 1 + 300 F2.8L over a 1DXII and 70-200. Just a thought.

Very well though out. I would look for a 1D IV as a backup to the 1DX.
