Question.

I took this photo last night. It's a big crop from the 5D4. The wooden stake is pretty sharp but the bird has a bit of motion blur at 1/800th, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

But it got me wondering what shutter speeds you guys shoot at to freeze bird motion.

1/1600 absolute minimum on a 400mm lens length. And work up from 1/1600 sec if using longer lens. If it was my 5dsr I would be around 1/ 2,000 of sec min for longer lens say 500-600mm to be sure of getting a reasonably sharp shot

Pondrader get Rover on a leash! Beautiful moose.
I'm still way down south and yesterday actually saw a Cardinal-I didn't even draw the
camera to the eye! But did pluck this one out of the weeds-

Send me to the Dunces corner! I rarely take the extender off, but this morning, after a 60km trip to new ground, I realised that I had left it at home!...............of course, I had to have my first sighting of a kingfisher, let alone manage to take a pic of one. In my haste to get a shot, I banged one off with the silly aperture of f14. Bless Canon for this lens's IS. Managed to get one shot off at long distance and have done my best with the 100% crop. I'm going back tomorrow so hopefully he'll still be around

Nice photo Kev. If you're interested in some CC, I think the blue channel has been a bit over saturated

Didn't touch the colour mate. Straight from RAW and just shadows and highlight adjustment a burn on the eye, and a bit of sharpening. I think it's that funny bokeh the lens chucks out every now and again?? But yes, it does look heavy on the blue.

maybe it was the highlights adjustment. I've found that LR CC can sometimes have issues with its automatic masking of the sky around other features in the image, particularly if you pull the highlights all the way down, push shadows hard and start adding saturation and contrast (which you didn't do this time though)

Having spent several years with a 70-200 as my longest lens, 200-400mm is actually quite a bit more reach than I was anticipating. Very, very pleased with this lens so far.
