I just added a 5D IV to my 7D II to shoot birds with my 500 F4 II. When I did some controlled "croppability" tests, I found that the 7D II still out-resolved my 5D IV, but that with a 1.4x TC, the 5D IV beat the 7D II. The order was...

The 5D IV is still very croppable though.

That's pretty much what I have found so far, although I haven't had much of an opportunity yet to really try them both out on the same exact type of target. I think I will keep my 7D2 as the primary birder with the 500 f4 and use the 5DIV with the 100-400II with or without the 1.4 on it. I do sometimes get too close for the 500 and its nice to have the other camera ready to go.

this puts my mind at rest choosing to keep my 7DII and 5DIII. I love them both but had considered selling both for the 5D4. But 10 frames per second is very fast and what I need at times. Perhaps in the future the 5D4 will be affordable for me but I think the 7DII wont be going anywhere

One thing that I am looking to do when I get time is a similar test to see how the images crop but at higher ISO, around the 3200 - 6400 mark which is where I often fine I am at under the canopy and in the rainforests in order to keep higher shutter speeds.

Well impressed ISO 4000

Lovely shot, I see them occasionally where I walk daily, but only as a flash of blue never once seen one perched.
I don't think you need be surprised at that iso though, this thing is a beast and exposed correctly iso 12800 is well useable.

Good shot! As Teamspeed has shown on multiple occasions, if you can ETTR, high ISOs on even a 7D is more than acceptable.
