Aurora above, bioluminescence below!

Hi all,

I recently visited Tasmania for a couple of weeks, and one of my goals was to photograph the Aurora Australis. I only had a couple of clear nights, but on the second one I got lucky and was able to capture not just the aurora, but also an outbreak of bioluminescent plankton (Noctiluca scintillans) in the breaking waves

Wow, congrats on both seeing it and capturing it so well. I like #3 the best.

congratulations job well done I've never seen it was taken from the Southern Hemisphere good job !

I could be wrong, but I believe you have also captured our nearest galactic neighbor, the Large Magellanic Cloud on the upper left of your shots. Well done!

One other thing...did you see the biolum when you got there, or did the 30s shutter reveal it?

yup, the LMC is in all pic's
In pic 2 you can also see the SMC above the LMC

I've never seen the LMC or the SMC. NH skies suck! Some day, I'll make it down under....

Both the bioluminescence and the aurora were clearly visible with the naked eye, although the colour wasn't detectable just the glow. The bioluminescence was very bright when each wave came in!

You won't be able to miss either of the Magellanic Clouds when you come down south... they stand out very clearly!

Pretty amazing stuff and looks like a great place to be. I must be getting old, I find the photos on this forum more appealing then the Glamour/Nude forum....when did THAT happen!
