looking for a macro lens for my friend, budgeting $150-$250


5D2, 1Ds2, 1D2N
Rok 8mm, 35mm, 85mm; CZ 28-85mm; Canon 28-80L, Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8
fs: Tokina 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8; Contax Zeiss 135mm f/2.8, Canon 70-200mm f/4L; 1D classic; lots of alt lenses from 28-210mm

The Canon 50 is only 1:2, not real macro. The Tamron is macro, but it extends on close focus, getting in its own way. I think both have excellent reputations wrt optics, but both have reasons to pass on them.

For that kind of money you can get a copy of the old Canon EF 100 f/2.8 Macro (non-USM). Optically, it is as good as the USM version.

If cost is a real issue, buy a 25mm Extension tube and any old EF-s 18-55. You can do 1:1 macro with that for <$100.

I'd be down for the 100/2.8 Macro as well.
