I would like to purchase a 600EX II RT flash for my Canon 5D3. I am interested in off camera flash. What other equipment will I need to shoot one off camera flash?

Either another 600, or an ST-E3 for wireless.

For low price you can do it wired, but why by the most expensive wireless 2.4ghz flash made if you aren't going to go wireless.

Someone might have to check me on this; but I think you can use the 600 with the old optical wireless system in your 580ex. Not optimal. Again, why get the best 2.4GHZ..yadayadayada..

If you would like to get the same wireless options for a lot lower costs, a Godox/Flashpoint 2.4ghz ETTL flash with an X1 controller would run you about 1/5 the price of the 600 and ST-E3rt

Thanks for the reply. Another question: could I use a pocket wizard? What model would you recommend? Or should I stick with the Canon ST-E3?

The 600EX does work with the old canon optical wireless. That system is less reliable than the wireless.

Yongnuo also makes a competing wireless system. I have the 600EX's at home and later bought some yongnuo flashes and the radio trigger for work. The yongnuo's aren't as ruggedly built as the canon's but they work. Two flashes and the trigger were a little over $300.

They've been out for at least a couple of years and there's not much (any) discussion of them failing. Wedding shooters may prefer the premium build when knocked around at work. Home users and the occasional user in a controlled setting probably won't.

Personally I'm not a big fan of Pocketwizzard. Maybe the new one is more relyable. Before I went to the ST-E3 the PW worked from time to time, it wasn't something to rely on.

The ST-E3 on the other hand ... well nothing but praises (except for the price maybe).

Last I was asked to do a barber shop. I was some 30m outside the shop (the other side of the street) and thanks to the ST-E3 the shop was lit up nicely with two 60EX's.
Probably PW could do the same (but I'm not so sure about that).

Good luck.

Greetings from Ghent, Alain

The alternative to the Canon ST-E3 is the Yongnuo version which is cheaper and I believe allows 2nd curtain sync which the Canon doesn't.

Pocketwizard are Betamax now.
