Thanks mystik. I honestly can't get over the quality of photos on instagram (once you find the right people and groups to follow). I find it to be higher than Flickr etc. I just struggle to get a following there though

I've started getting more active on instagram very recently since I've been watching my wife get a lot of activity on hers by posting my photos. The photos on her account were featured on Disney's own instagram account twice now.

The social elements of instagram are lightyears ahead of flickr. The key is to use your hashtags effectively, and to actively socialize with other members (add followers, like photos, etc etc).

On another note. Just took this picture with the Google Pixel XL. No edits done to it. https://flic.kr/p/Nc6az9 (external link)

Man that thing was announced a week after I got my new phone. They speak very highly of their camera

My following and feedback on IG is higher than Flickr. The trick I've found is to submit quality images, post often, use the right hashtags, and be active by commenting on other people's work. You can find me under alfredomoraphotography

These sites help me find good meaningful tags

One of my favorite genre's too and I wish I lived in a truly metropolitan big city. Houston is a large city, but more of an urban sprawl than the more densely populated cities.

I'd say that that set is a mixture of cityscapes, street, and urban lifestyle photography...a little conceptual portraiture too.

Those guys are risk takers. There's a YouTube video in that sort of stuff, many guys from NYC or LA. I know of a fellow shooter that's done that sort of thing. My local shooting partner won't do it, got all freaked out when we shot from a parking garage, then saw a no photography sign........

I'll tell you, on IG, getting good growth requires a LOT of social activity, more than quality or tags. Those are icing on the cake. A so-so image featured by a big shot will do much better than a great image not featured. Tags certainly help because some big shots make their own tag to gain followers.... So they can see your work and feature you. I can literally spend all day on IG, and my account would grow faster... It's cool as hell for sure, some of your followers can be very good people, and compliment you on everything.

^ Agree. It's cool to comment on a favorite photographer's image and they respond within 15 minutes thanking you or answering your question. Very cool.

This reminded me of Eddie. I must visit Scotland one day. Epic scenery.

Stop over in SATX. Not as humid as Houston but still hot.

We actually might...both love SATX...would be a good trip for him...

While on the subject of street photography I've got a question about genres.

My favourite type of stuff on instagram is things like this www.instagram.com/citykillerz (external link) (just one example of many I follow). What would you say the genre is? A lot of them say street photography in the descriptions (like this one does) but it's not the candid photographs of strangers many class street photography as. Is it "urban" more than street? I've often wondered this

Edit - I just realised I posted this in the wrong thread but the same people are here :)

that is cool stuff...followed them...

Another image that with a Canon would have required a LOT more editing time...as it is there was enough...but the DR this body captures blows my mind still...I just love it...and the richness and glow of the colors...Top 5 sunrise of my life...and this was just the beginning...I have another to edit of the finale...

I'm not a huge fan of that type of dangerous type of photography with people sitting on rooftops or ledges. Just seems unnecessarily dangerous.

you can surely classify many as street photography. I noticed the account is actually a feature account, they dont post their own content, but content of others and give credit to them. If they pick up one of your photos, it can get you a lot of followers for a few hours, assuming they have good engagement to start with. Tags on IG vs Groups on Flickr do differ slightly. A group on flickr is a pool you put in. There's no advantage to putting in a pool other than chronological order placing your photo on top of the pool. Of course, you can get pushed down over time. Tags on the other hand are like that, but it's unmanaged. Nobody owns the tag, nobody creates it in the way you create groups. It just generates and populates. The upside is that there are "top posts" kind of like getting explored just for that tag. If you hit a top post, you may get more likes than normal since your photo stays on top for a few hours or a few days! The tag is just a search criteria grouped rather than a managed group. Just works out better since it's all public. No need to manage or ask permission ect.
