Canon EOS M5- Share your pictures, thoughts, loves, concerns....

Maybe a bit under two months from release--anyone else signed up for Canon's first mirrorless with EVF?
I signed up day one, excited to support Canon in their aggrandizement of the M series. Nice knowing a
very 80D-ish sensor will be in the M5, sad knowing that no IBIS will be present. I guess no IBIS is in line
with the Canon DSLRs
I hope the M5 does well with sales (not doing badly last time I checked Amazon) and that Canon puts out
a few more m-mount lenses.
So I hope I won't be the only one contributing to this thread when release comes!

Here is the important part to me:

I'd had hopes the 400/5.6 would AF with the M5, looks even better-that the 100-400ii does very well with it !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm elated to say the least.

I am also interested in this. I am torn between downsizing to mirrorless (M5/Sony) or moving up to 6D. If i find something with tempting price, I might make a switch from 70d. Down sides are 6D with video focussing issues and M5 price. I think M5 is kinda expensive compared to Sony ones. And Sony crop IQ is pretty good. Video quality on M5, seems to be not much improvment to upgrade either.

I've been in the Sony camp a long long time-still am. In fact waiting on a pre-ordered a99ii and currently using several e-mount bodies. We all have a tripping point. Example, I tripped into mFT because Sony as of now has yet to add a 400mm e-mount lens. Panasonic has the 100-400mm which is my everyday everywhere carry. If Sony would have had a 400mm e-mount I'd probably have not entered into the Panasonic-Olympus world---glad I did though for weight reasons alone.
But now Sony has the a6300 (have one) and the a6500 bodies---each is an AF-tracking machine. Their AF abilities rival my EOS 1DXii, but again where is the long glass?
Olympus has the beautiful 300mm/F4 (better-half has one of those) and soon the OMD-M1 mark II will be out and again where is Sony? Surely Sony sees Oly and Panasonic address the wildlife/birder crowd but along comes the M5 !!

So if someone (like me) has EOS bodies (and me and the Mrs.) seem to collect them, why even an interest in the M5?
Well that's a topic for another time!

I'd be more interested if there were more lenses built for the EF-M mount. Give me one good 24-75 equivalent ish zoom with a fast aperture and I'd probably be all over it. A few more fast prime options and a faster wide angle would be nice too.

I've said it before, but I was hoping Panasonic would announce an LX200 because that's probably closest to what I want, but the M5 is compelling. It looks like enough of an improvement in enough areas at a competitive price overall.

I would imagine the AF tracking would be like the 1DX 2, 80D, and 5D4 in live view mode, which by all accounts I've heard, is exceptional.

Problem is I cannot hold the camera at body length and follow a BIF in live view.
Now if live view on the LCD translates to an equally effective live view in the EVF then
I hope what your saying about focus like the 80D or 1DXii would be great, seriously great.

Personally I don't mind using EF or EF-s lenses, my goal with the M5 is primarily back up
to larger EOS bodies while I'm out; wearing a 22/2 for wide encounters will probably be its
secondary role.

Now why is Canon not including the EF-M adapter in the US market like they are overseas ??

They include the adapter overseas? Interesting.

I already have the adapter, 22, and 18-55 EF-M so that's not an issue for me. I've had my EOS M for almost 3 years now I want to say and I continue to be pretty happy with it, but wouldn't mind what the M5 represents potentially. I'd probably get the wide angle to go with it and call it a day as far as building a more compact kit to go alongside the 5D3 (which I'll probably upgrade to the 4 soon).

Although everyone is hating on the M5, and I willingly acknowledge its limitations, I think the price is fair for how it stacks up feature (and sensor) wise against the competition. The EF-M lens selection is the one area it's behind IMO.

Anyway, given that it seems like the M5 basically has the 80D sensor if I'm not mistaken, it should be good and there's no reason I can imagine that the AF would be different in live view vs EVF on the M5.

I am also afraid of needing too much money to get equivalent Sony lens. I am able to get Canon 10-18mm, 85mm 1.8 lens for around $200 each. Then I have nice and cheap sigma 17- 50mm f2.8 common walk around lens which is my most used lens. Sony has very expensive 16-70 F4 lens. I can probably get their 16-50 kit along with sigma E 30mm 1.4 as walk around lens.

Then there are always compatibility issues with old lens / adapter focusing systems whenever they come up with new release. I am also not sure about their focusing system in low light. They are great in good light. Now their latest cameras doesn't focus with wide open. With slow kit lens and low light, it is going to be a problem.

We have to wait and see how M series pans out and is Sony going to compete with Canon crop lens for price with similar performance. Sony hasn't release any crop lens for last 3 years. They released high end crop cameras with amazing tech (a6300 and a6500). But not even bothered to upgrade kit lens.

I just pre-ordered on amazon (gotta love 12mo no interest). Hopefully I got all my pre-order bad luck out of the way with No Man's Sky.

I want to feel it in my hands before I order one. Had to send the Lumix GX85 back cuz it just didn't feel right for "me"... I'm hopeful though.

My biggest concern is that I'll be kicking myself for letting my 200 2.8l go. It focused too slowly with my M3, but the M5 looks like a whole new ballgame. Think I'll rent one for a week when they come out, and try NOT to get hooked....it looks brilliant. I love the low profile built in viewfinder as opposed to my hotshoe mounted one...

Worse, no one with actual experience using EF lenses mounted to the M5.

I've done that with my M. I put my 70-200 and 580EX on it. It looked hilarious... I'm sure I have the picture around here somewhere....

True, the camera does look a bit silly with a big lens on it. But I don't take pictures of it, but with it! The M3 sensor is so much better than my 40D or 60D was. I usually have my M lenses on, but if I want super-sharp (bird eyes!), the bigger lens is what's needed. I'm just an enthusiast, though. I can't justify having a larger body with all the paraphernalia (batteries, chargers, cases, etc) taking up space when it is mostly unused. The M3 is almost always with me...the 60D was usually not.

When I know I'll be heading out somewhere with photo potential, the silliness of a big lens on a small camera really won't be bothering me!.

And I really like how the M5 might focus faster and be "smaller" than the M3...my EVF stays mounted to my M3 (and looks a bit silly, too!)
