Sitting out on the front porch, waiting for a butterfly to land on one of Linda's hibiscus. Many passed by, one landed, I was too slow. I took a few flower photos anyways and found this tiny fly on one. This lens, without the usually attached 1.4 extender is very sharp, for me. The 1.4 has minimal effect on sharpness, it seems to me. I always attach it for birds.

Distance was about 4 meters, the first is slightly cropped and resampled for the website server. These are stopped down for DOF.

Tighter crop to show the Long-legged Fly detail. I will try again for butterflies, they are migrating through here right now.

On my short walk to the mailbox, I encountered this Hasselt's Spiny Orbweaver, hanging on her web, in the afternoon sun. After delivering our mail to the house, I returned to the location with my birding rig, stopped down for DOF and set for AF at 3.3 to 8 meters. These are handheld, about 50% crops and processed with NeatImage and sharpened.

A famous bird photographer told me long ago, "Mike, you can never go wrong with a nice green background". I wish I had remembered that for the first image.

Something different. Landscape photography with 400mm. My favourite peak illuminated by the last sunrays.

I got to have a play with one of these at a recent Canon Collective event here in Adelaide. Pretty awesome piece of kit.

Great shots, Jim! Did you get these by the grassy areas just to the east of the South Jetty by Parking Lot C?

Edit: I automatically assumed Clatsop Spit... until I saw your earlier photos from Reedsport. Now, I am wondering if you are referring to a different jetty, perhaps further south.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

OK, I am in love with this lens, I admit it. I owned and used the original 400DO for almost ten years. This new version is so much sharper and the IS is way superior. A perfect lens for hand held photos.

Encore Azalea from our back yard, with a Honey Bee, from about 3.3 meters, 50% crop.

Beach Morning Glory with Clouded Sulfur Butterfly, from about 5 meters.

These are hand held, about 50% crops.
