I don't have herculean arms or hands of a surgeon.. Whilst I have a 100-400, it's pretty useless when shooting small prop planes at a distance, so the 600 gets used the most.

Not true practice you will get a good sharp plane with prop blur with a long lens. I do it all the time. Sure you throw out more than you keep but it is possible with minimal practice.

You won't get better at it if you don't try. As said by others you usually get multiple passes at an air show so you have the time to try different shutter speeds. Like many I have shot the 100-400 for years but last season I moved up to the Sigma 150-600 C which served me well even though it's heavier than anything I've shot prior. I've added photos from it to this thread (with it on a 1D4) and this is from that combo at the full 600 mm. hand held by a 69 year old hobby photographer. 1D4, 150-600 C, @600 mm, f13, ISO 100 shutter speed 1/200

This is a great picture with so much to like -- not just prop blur but background blur , flying but close to the ground.

Yes

You photogs should try sporting clays, bird hunting or trap. You will learn to pick up and follow through on a shot.

1/160 at 600mm with the Canon 300 F2.8 and a 2X extender. Also check out Andy Nguyen at WildWingsphotography.c​om, hes a champ at slow shutter speeds and routinely shoots at 600 or 800mm

I've shot my original 35-350 L on crop bodies with decent results that slow & it has no IS. In actual fact I'm much smoother at low shutter speeds while panning than I am at any shutter speed shooting a static subject.

This is 1/60 sec. @ 400mm w/70-200 f/2.8 w/2X TC & no IS.

Yes, some don't come out as well, but I'm shooting for the ones that do.

I usually dont use IS. If you pan fast the gyro tumbles, causing the image to jump

I find fast panning without IS I get more keepers too

Over the past few years I've used the Canon 300 f2.8 IS II, 70-200 f2.8 IS II, 400 DO II and 500 II for airshows.
Not one time have I experienced a gyro tumble, and I leave my lenses set to IS 2.

Could it be that your lens is malfunctioning?
