Welcome, Nifty!

Nifty arrived today in a bonus pack. Thank you, Renata ... for Nifty, the new hood, polarization filter, lens cap, nice note and the biggest surprise ... a beautiful piece of your art. More about that later!

At present we would like anyone wishing to host have at least a 200 post count or have been active on POTN for a year. Hopefully, this will reduce the number of people that do not participate in a timely manner, or "forget" to move Nifty on to the next host, or simply don't care.

* Though, this doesn't seem to alter the fact that people tend to forget to send Nifty on and tend to post very little... with some exceptions! To sign up to be a host, please copy the list completely, add your name to the bottom of the sub-list that is in your area of the world, paste the entire list into a new post with your name added.

USA Nifty:

(CO) KbColorado (in possession)
(UT) tadrscin
(Chicago IL) KurtB

(Chicagoland, IL) Nekrosoft13
(Orlando FL) Justman1020 (No Response, moved to bottom of the list)
(Hawaii) ChrisBlaze (deployed, but on the list!)
(MI) Blake C
USA - (Texas) Ron Bailey (Possessed a Nifty, but Nifty is missing and now Written Off as Gone)
(RI) Archer1960

Euro Nifty:

I have information about the disappeared Dupan Nifty that was with (Kandahar-Afghanistan) Bk2life (james)
He brought it back to the USA with him...
So if you are near the top of the USA list, contact James if you are ready to host.

Just another reason you are one of the best hosts Renata. <3

Great news Paul. I love Colorado and look forward to seeing where you live.

That is wonderful Joayne. Happy that Dupan Nifty is back in the rotation.

As for Adorama Nifty. We went out today to a Remembrance day Ceremony at the Military Museum here in Calgary. Excited to get him out after a short stint sitting quietly in my bag. I knew it would be crazy busy and didn't want to bring everything with me. So I just brought Nifty and my camera and left the backpack at home. I get there, find a great location to watch from and turn on the camera...... and the screen says.... no memory card..... This is a first. Needless to say, I have no photos from today. I will be out tomorrow.

The road through Hardscrabble Pass, the shortest way to Colorado Springs or Pueblo from here. It follows an old stagecoach route. Fare for a ride on the stagecoach was cheaper if you agreed to get out and push on the steepest parts.

The most prominent peak is Lovers Leap.

Animals outnumber humans in our county. Nifty is earnest in its efforts to be a wildlife lens, but it's strengths lie elsewhere :-)

These are Pronghorn Sheep. Many of the locals call them antelope but no antelope live in North America. These are the fastest mammals on the continent. They were hanging out by the road but
of course started moving away when I stopped. They hung out a little bit until the Big Boy second from the right decided it was time to leave.

And I do know that feeling of dragging Nifty out to a location only to discover that I had no memory card in my camera. I've learnt my lesson and planted 2 spares in my car and some in my camera bags :)

ENifty here!

Mam's been far too busy at work for my liking so I haven't been able to keep up with the posts. However, Last weekend we went off on a walk we had done previously but we had to move faster as it gets dark so early now. Also, everything is really brown and dull compared to the summer colours. Here are a few photos.

Great excitement when Mam spotted a wren as she has been trying to photograph one (on and off I'd say) for years. It's a tiny bird (second smallest of all the British birds) and I was on the camera - whoo hoo! Well, this is a huge crop and she had the 70-200mm in the bag but by the time she switched lenses the wren was long gone.

Looking over to Skye - it seems unbelievable that I've been to the top of one of those hills (one of the higher ones in the clouds). Mam thought we might go do another one this weekend but the weather is awful and there's snow on the tops.

In 1869, a group of 250 German Lutherans in Chicago agreed on a plan. They would each contribute $250 and venture west to the mostly unsettled area of the Wet Mountain Valley in the Rocky Mountains. They took the railroad as far west as possible, to Kansas City. From there it was a wagon train to an area that is now south central Colorado. They would homestead the area, live off the land, and make a new start. A combination of lack of agricultural experience, horrible weather and worse luck doomed the expedition within the first year.

When they arrived, a lottery determined the order the homesteaders would choose their acreage. William Schulze won the lottery, and chose an area that had everything ... a precious water supply of three creeks flowing from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains just to the west, trees to offer protection from the winds that would often howl from the northwest and, as a bonus, a beautiful up close view of the Rockies.

William's luck did finally run out. The original church for the colonists was 2 miles north of Schulze's ranch. The graveyard remains though the church was relocated to the town of Westcliffe, about 8 miles north.

In 1958, 4 plots of 2 acres each were parceled off the ranch. One of these is where we live now.

Nifty and I both got a high altitude workout today. Nifty took it like a champ. I'll feel better tomorrow

My dog Sophie sitting still for a rare moment with our friend Bob. We are hiking up an old road that has been closed to traffic for a few years now.

The exception to the no traffic rule is for search and rescue vehicles. These mountains attract climbers from all over and there are many calls for rescue every summer. This is Broken Hand Peak.

Broken Hand Peak on the left, Crestone Needle on the right. When climbers get into trouble, it is usually on the descent from Crestone Needle.

Beautiful shots Annie and Paul. That is a really interesting story

Great shots, Annie! I imagine it's getting cold out now. It sure is here.

Fascinating story, Paul. Love the pics too. And looking at your friend, it's cold in your part of the world too!

Thanks, everyone.

Paul, love your photos and story of the settlers. Great that you managed to get such a beautiful parcel of land. Did you purchase it from William's descendants or had it gone back to the state?

I would be up these mountains in a second if I was there! Probably need Mountain Rescue to get me, though, as I'm no mountaineer - just a crazy hill-walker.

Levina, we had snow on the hills but it melted in the last couple of days as the temperature shot up. If it's OK with you, I'll hold on to ENifty for a few days more to see if we can get one more outing.
