If I take enough pictures, at least one of them should turn out...maybe

This isn't really photo-sharing, so let me apologize for going OT...

- Considering the price of the M5 i just took a smaller-ish leap and bought the M3 (Amazon Cyber Monday Deal) - hope I won't have any regrets over that one (apart for explaining to wifey why I change my camera after only 2 years).

Keeping the 22mm and the EF/EF-S adapter for the M3 but will bundle 18-55, batteries, flash and chargers (just bought an usb-charger for using with my powerbank)
- Don't know how much I'll get out of the M after 2 years, but I still figure I can sell it for something to cover part of the upgrade.

Cameras: EOS M & M3 --- Lenses: 22mm EF-M, 18-55mm EF-M, FD 50mm f/1.4, EF-S 55-250mm IS II, Sigma 600mm f/8
Disclaimer:The fact that I'm slightly color blind with a crappy monitor and have little or no clue about PP doesn't prevent me from enjoying holding a camera - it just makes it harder to make my photos look normal to you...

I've been enjoying my M, and got a really good deal on an M3 on black friday through Canon's refurb site.

These might be some of the last pictures I post with the M.

Hi
I'm interested in this thread because I have a 70D and have been thinking for quite some time about a back up camera, although I am very much a hobbyist. I simply would hate to be without my camera for more than a day or so, although I don't shoot every day.

Anyway am thinking about the M5, just wondering if any of you have used it, and what ideas about it???

Many thanks
Rose

The M5 costs more than a 70D at this point. So the 70D would be your backup camera? Are you looking to replace the 70D?

If you truly just want a backup camera, I would look at a very inexpensive but working camera that someone else has already taken the depreciation from. Maybe an M3 or a T5i to keep it newer. Or if it's truly a backup, as in, will sit forever until your 70D breaks, then look at an EOS-M1, XSi, 40D, etc, and keep it cheap.

Very best,

I used the EOS M for some food photography for a new restaurant yesterday. The rear LCD and grid overlay made overhead shots super easy to setup.

Very best,

No will keep the 70D .... would probably choose a lens to keep on n the M5 and use both cameras depending on what I'm shooting on n the day, and how much gear I want to carry that day. I walk the dog every day and tend to take the 70D with Sigma 18 -35 f. 8. It's a great combo but can be a bit heavy.

Thanks for the input.

Is the M3 as good as the M5 ... I'll read some reviews. I do like the Wifi and b touch screen on the 70D .... mainly use viewfinder but touch screen great for setting up long exposures.

Has anyone had a chance to compare the M10 with the M Classic (yes, I'm calling it the classic) ?

I'm planning on getting an M10 in the next month or so anyway, just wondering if the newer Digic processor has made an improvement in image quality to the aging 18mp sensor.

Wex have a good deal on them at the minute as a kit with the 15-45 STM. There's even a Canon cash back offer going.

Cheers

Gary.

Doing directly overhead shots of food is surprisingly difficult. Getting everything lined up while stretching to get the most height you can and still being able to see out of the viewfinder is a PITA. Half the time you are blocking your own light with your body holding the camera. If you set the camera on a tripod, often the tripod legs can get in the way or cast shadows.

So after some brainstorming, it finally clicked how I was going to set this up. I set the "table" (some custom boards) on the floor, set the food in the middle and put the M on an old tripod my dad gave me with a sandbag on top to hold it steady. Using the back screen as my viewfinder made it super easy to line up the dishes. I touched to focus and set the timer so that I could step back and not block any light.

Av mode f8, ISO 100.

Setup and some results.
