This morning I worked a Bluebird with
A7Rii + Metabones T IV + Tamron 1.4TC + Tam150-600mm G2.
A7Rii was in 'crop' mode for a 35 equiv of 1260mm.
Manual focus past 400mm. AF was surprisingly good below 350-360mm (with TC).
Distance from my perch to the bird's perch was 42 feet.

I've been going back and forth on this one. I really love the idea of 600mm reach but I really like how much smaller the 1-4mk2 packs. It's about the same length as the 70-200f2.8 and only just a touch thicker. I've already got a 1.4x extender so I would be able to get pretty close to this tammy when needed. I'm just curious if I would end up using the 1-4 more often because of it's travel size. For example, bring it along for weddings for outdoor ceremonies, where this 150-600 would stay home. If I take my kid to the park, would I bring the 150-600 every time? I've been seeing the 1-4 used for about $1750 or so and no tammy g2 on the used market yet. So would I get more use out of this focal range for the extra money($300-400)? I think I can justify the cost if I use the lens in my biz photography too.
Every time I think I've made up my mind, something adds to the other side. I really like the 1-4's close focusing and, I'm going to be honest, would totally prefer Canon's AF consistency/accuracy. I've got the 300f4IS & 400f5.6 coming from CPS next week because they're so much cheaper/lighter but am leaning towards a zoom. 4 VERY clean 300f4IS sold on ebay for less than $700 over the last 2 weeks. I'll be taking the 1-4mk2 on eval loan afterwards.

I guess my question to owners of this G2 (and first gen), are you using this lens for anything other than wildlife/outdoor sports? Has anyone ever incorporated it into portraits?

Of course you can use it for other things, lots of perspective compression with portraits and landscapes. But trying to use it for a function or wedding reception is likely to decapitate someone.....

I was just at Brian's site comparing IQ TamG2 at 600mm versus the Canon 100-400ii at 560mm.
I've got Panama coming up in several days and still trying to decide on what kit to take :)

Damn, now I need more money for more lenses. It NEVER ENDS, SEND HELP.

Was the original 150-600 one of Tamron's best selling lenses? I'm not sure if anyone has any info regarding which lens they sell the most of. A second version with all the new goodies is a great idea. I'd love an even more premium version with a fixed f/4 or 2.8-5.6. It would probably be huge and expensive though, not really Tamron's target audience.

Does anyone know if they're planning a G2 version of the 70-200?

In AU the G2 is $1,749.00 (new) grey stock from Hong Kong which is a decent price considering no one is selling used G2's yet.
The original 150-600 is still AU $1,063.89 new from HK and ~800 used.

I might have to sell my still 'as new' used 150-600 before the price drops just to play with the new one.

Looking forward to more sample shots!

Wait don't you own both of those? Why would you use his site to compare instead of using your own examples? Besides you could have copy variation that he doesn't.

I was at a photography meet up event last night in NJ and an editor and writer from PDN magazine was there. They had the 150-600 G2 setup for some testing and analysis in the studio. I asked to borrow it for a few minutes and went outside to shoot the moon.

This image at 1/200th, handheld on a Canon crop sensor at 600mm. I have another shot at 1/160th f/9 that is good or better. That is the craziest image stabilization I've ever experienced.

Impressive, looks like as soon as the IS is on the lens will just hang in the air. :)

I know others have reported good results on the stabilisation on the G1 lens also. It has been a bit more variable for me, depends on my stance etc.

Can you post a 100% (pixel for pixel crop so we can check out the fine level sharpness?

This is 100% crop crop. Understand it is coming off a Canon T2i, not exactly the best sensor for pixel peeping but I'm surprised at how well this did. FYI this version was done at f/9, 1/160th

Good to see you still enjoying a T2i. I have one too-had it modded for Hydrogen Alpha emissions. Still a great camera even after all these years.

Handheld I assume since you were enjoying the IS. I've got no complaints on my copy--just need to save up the dough to get a copy in A-mount.

This is the type of performance that is overlooked by test charts. How consistent was the focus?

It nailed focus on every shot. The original lens was always on my wish list, I think this one is worth the difference in price. I'm upgrading my camera body in the next month or two first then I''ll start saving again for this lens.

Using the 5Dsr today with the TamG2. Had to choose the 1st gen lens for the database since the G2 is not available yet :(
