Oh yes, I like refurbs too. Thanks for your link, I'm sure many will find the refurb an attractive offer.

I live in California, Los Angeles county, with a high sales tax. And...it gets higher next year due to a transportation bill passed by voters.
Should be 10% me thinks

Be thankful CA is expensive. If it weren't, we'd all be out there. My cousin lives in San Diego. He recently paid $1.1M for a house he could have gotten in rural Indiana for 20% of that, view & weather NOT included.

I think the price for a new 80D body is about to drop to $1,099. Amazon, Adorama, and even Canon have it at that price.

Canon 80D, 60D, Canon 10-22EFs, 15-85EFS IS, Sigma 100-400, Sigma 135/1.8ART, Sigma 30mm f/1.4DC, Canon 60mm EFs Macro, Rokinon 8mm fisheye, 550EX flash, Olympus TG6 underwater P&S
Postprocessing: DxOLabs 5, DxO Viewpoint 3, Paint Shop Pro 2021

May the gods of G.A.S. help me. I just ordered a refurbished 80D/18-55 STM. May be selling a 1DIV shortly.

Congrats on your 80D, keep us posted on how it performs for you.

Sell the 1DIV? Oh man, that's classic camera. The last of the Canon 1.3 sensor, and still a very capable camera.
I have two 1DIVs and don't believe I'll ever part with them. Well, you know what they say - never say never.

Thanks. Canon offers a 14-day NQA return on refurbs. That gives me a good chance to check it out. My biggest concern is AF in AI-Servo. I read every review I could find; I think it will do the job. If not, back it goes. I'm hoping it works out.

A prime motivator is that I need to cut the weight of the 1DIV/100-400 combo I shoot field sports with. In August, I took a spill off my motorcycle. Damage to the bike, minimal; it is ride-able. Damage to me: not bad, for a motorcycle accident, considering no helmet. I completely severed 3 of the 4 tendons that comprise the right rotator cuff (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor). Subscapular undamaged. Also severed long head tendon of right biceps. Nasty damage. I'll be in sling until the first week of February. I should be able to return to work in early April. I've already been told full recovery will be at least a year, and I'll never get full strength back in my right arm. I'm thinking a lighter camera is a good idea. Using an 80D/70-200 f/4 about cuts the weight in half from 1DIV/100-400.

Sorry to hear this, wishing you a speedy recovery.

Maybe time to sell the bike and put the money towards camera gear?

My daughter would love that. She hates it. "You're gonna die on that thing!" I'd rather do that than die on my couch. (But, not for about 30 years!)

FYI, the refurb 80D has dropped to $799. At that price, I know Santa has one with my name on it.

Yeah, I caught that. With the 18-55 it is down to $849. I got mine the first day they were available refurbished. I knew they'd either go down or go out of stock. I guessed wrong. :-(

On the brighter side, I find it a much better camera all around than the 70D was. AF (# points, configurability, accuracy, low-light), video, and more. I really like the chimping feature that shows WAY more EXIF data. And hey, the 80D works when bouncing flash!

Canon Store has it at $849. (external link). Am I missing the $799 price?

2 Samuel 9:7-8, "So David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table continually.” Then he bowed himself, and said, “What is your servant, that you should look upon such a dead dog as I?”

Nope. The kit w/18-55 STM is back up to $899.20. Body only: $849.20. It must have been a 1 or 2 day sale.

An update of sorts, on my 80D. I am way happy with it. It is a really good upgrade to the 70D. I think my favorite features are -3EV AF, and the huge amount of EXIF available when reviewing, and multiple 'My Menu' tabs. If you haven't seen this, go to a retail store and check it out for yourself. There a 5 or 6 pages of EXIF data available while reviewing photos. In 'My Menu' I can create custom tabs. They can be named and populated individually. I have 'General' tab, a 'Flash' tab, and an 'AI-Servo' tab. I can put what I want on each tab. Need a feature on 3 different tabs? Do it. Need to see ONLY My Menu when pressing 'Menu'. Its an option.

So far, the AI-Servo AF is everything I expected. I haven't tested it in a live football game, but my experienced guess is that it will perform admirably. It also has usable EC in Manual Mode w/Auto-ISO. The high-ISO performance is a big upgrade from the 70D, also. ISO 12800 files from the 80D are easier to work than ISO 6400 files from the 70D.

Is it a 1DIV? No. But if I could bring myself to sell the 1DIV, I don't think I'd be missing much performance. Had I bought the 80D two years ago (wasn't available), I would have already sold the 1DIV. These days, I'm not so quick to sell gear I really like. (Two cameras I wish I'd kept: 5Dc, 7NE) The 1DIV remains an excellent camera. IQ and noise handling are better than aps-c bodies up through the 70D generation. The 80D blurs the line. The main attraction to the 1DIV is customiz-ability. You can set that camera up to make breakfast and clean your garage, I think. It is still a lot of camera. I'm hanging on to it for a bit longer.

EDIT:
Proper prices on 80D/kits.
