Thank you greyswan. I asked his human about the ear and she said that he had an infection that left his ear permanently curled. Frostbite where I live would be very unlikely

@Greyswan When people take in stray cats to the vet to get them "fixed", the vet will cut the tip of their ear off. That way, if someone brings them in again, or they are nervous about a stray cat being around their own domestic cats that have not been fixed, they know already that that specific cat has been neutered.

Yes, I'm aware of that, Wilshawdr, I've been responsible for many a clipped ear in my neighborhood :-D, but thanks to both you and itsallart for your replies. It was the curled aspect that made me wonder what caused it.
