Doesn't FM require some kind of special email address to join? I have 3 emails and FM wouldn't accept any of them for membership so I said fuggeddabottit. :)

I checked my account information and it is just a regular gmail address required. However, if I remember correctly it did require a few attempts to successfully register though, lol. Overall I'm happy I did, the Nikon manual focus shooters are a great bunch of people to discuss photography with.

Still enjoy coming to this site occasionally but it just doesn't seem as personable as it used to be. I realize Pekka put a huge amount of time and effort into the appearance and versatility of the forum as it is now, plus in many if not most ways it is better than the old format, but it leaves me wanting with a feeling sometimes to just go home again.

I just saw an used AF-D 80-200 f/2.8 for 450 euro, in my city. It is a good price.
70-300 VR looks interesting with its 100 mm extra and VR.
Well, I will choose one of those two. Thanks!

D3300 and 50 1.4G
QUOTED IMAGE

I would go with the 80-200 f2.8. I have had two copies of the 70-300 vr and both were soft above 200mm apparently a common fault.

Its the earlier non af-s version but as my photo subjects - Aircraft and BIF are at some distance, the focus limiter will come in useful aiding the focus speed.

I used to have the 70-300VR but the 300 f4 is supposed to be in another ball park, from what i have read its also more genuine with its 300mm fov size, when comparing it against the 300Vr zoom on the same body, the prime shows a slight increse in image size.

Off a friend we haggled in a friendly way then aggreed the price, he has looked after it well and had the elements proffesionly cleaned, so I know opticaly it will be mint, its an old lens by its design but as we know its a stellar lens with few equals in its field.

Here are a few pics of the exact lens(few rub marks on the name plate - nothing to worry about)

Thanks smythie!
I know it, only Af-s lenses will work on d3300.
Can you recommend a good telephoto lens for FX? I have 70-300 VR on my mind.

Canon has a professional 70-200 f/4 L lens, with metal body and superior optics, which sells for 500 euro.

Nikon doesn't have a lens like that, at this price.

Do I have a better choice than 70-300 VR at this price range?

I have heard about old Nikkor 80-200, but I dont know how good are those old lenses...

Unfortunately there's no value like the f4L lens, that's probably the best steal of any lens I've ever had (enough that at least once a week I think of getting a Canon body just for that lens for headshots lol). That being said, the old 80-200mm is pretty good IQ wise, about on par with the 70-200mm VR1 just without the VR of course, and slower AF. Supposedly the AF-S version is pretty fast, but I heard that the motors are starting to fail now that the lenses are fairly old. Not 100% sure on that as I've never used the AF-S version. If you don't need fast AF (ie. sports, birds) then the older 80-200 is a steal at ~$400 from what I've seen online lately.

Another option if you like primes is the 180mm f2.8, or of course the 300mm AF-S f4 (non PF version). Both can be found around ~$500 used as well. Depending on budget I'd recommend saving for a used 70-200mm VR1, or Tamron f2.8 VC. Starting to see both for ~$900 probably thanks to the release of the newest VRIII lens.

EDIT: just saw you got the 300mm f4. Nice choice :) Thinking of getting one myself (unless I win the lotto and can buy the 2.8 haha)

Hi tdlavigne! Its not me who got a 300 f4.

Today I got the D700. Finally, after 2 weeks, it came. It has only 10.000 shoots. Its a nice professional camera, but is heavy and not easy to use. Before I had a Canon 5D and it was easy to use.

Another problem is the aperture. In A mode, I can't change the aperture. It stays all the time at f5.6

I don't know what to do with this D700. Maybe its too much for my needs. This is the impression of first day.

I am enjoying D3300, its very light and is a pleasure to walk around with it.

Of course full frame has better in IQ,, but they are heavy and expensive.

Maybe my light combo D3300 + 18-55 + 35 1.8 + 55-200 is all what I need.
