First there was Silver Cliff, a silver mining boom town that thrived until the price of silver crashed around 1890. At it's height the third largest town in Colorado, the silver crash was just a continuation of Silver Cliff's bad luck. The first crushing blow and the one that still echoes today is the decision by the railroad to buy up land directly west of Silver Cliff and then build a spur off the main rail line 40 miles to the north that ended in the new town of Westcliffe.
