Nekro, we're not going to L/D14 this year. Headed to Florida in a couple of days for paddle camping, then over Christmas Ohio looking for Harriers and SEOs. March back to Florida for Osprey,
June/July Utah for Milky Way, then September Hungary/Romania for whatever is there :)
So that's my schedule!

impressive schedule, have fun!

That must be really something to see.
We have some Eagles around here, maybe I can get a few shots of them.
Of course, I don't have a lens like that.

I live about 90 miles east of 14 and we are currently in a cold snap-mid teens to highs in long 20s for a couple more days, then highs in 30s and los in upper 20s 'til CHRISTMAS week when forecast is cold for about 4 weeks, no temps above freezing. So...At least something to ponder.

FYI

JVthePT, you mentioned having several Eagles there in Ottumwa. Is there any decent places to park and get reasonably close to them? In past years I have passed through the area and saw a lot of Eagles sitting in trees South of the bridge as I turned East off of hwy 63. Looked like they were lining both sides of the river and if a person could get off on the East side of the bridge and South side of hwy that some good shots might be possible.
I live 55 miles South of you near hwy 63 and making a run up to Ottumwa would be an easy drive.
We are also in the planning stages of a drive to L&D14 sometime in 2017 so look forward to seeing comments about the Eagles in that location as well.

Yep Grizz1, I get many good shots in Ottumwa. I have many on Flickr in an album. Only a handful of them are not from Ottumwa. Let me know if you are making a run up to O-town any time this year.

Has anyone been there this season to see if the last dead tree is still there? If it's gone it'll be interesting what happens with the eagle count, perching spots near the water will be very limited.

Any action at L&D 14? It's been a great week here in Ottumwa on the Des Moines river.
Looking forward to seeing photos from the famous 14!

Yep same here, Shoot around here in lower SE Michigan we got major rivers frozen over, I gotta assume the Eagles have said screw this cold and ice were fishing on the Mississippi river this winter.

Come on locals chime in if you've been and saw and conquered :) haha

Probably not a good week coming up, Temps forecast in the 50'stand with thunderstorms on Christmas.
I had 3 great outings in Ottumwa (check my Flickr) but the past 2 days the ice has melted considerably and the eagles have dispersed quite a bit. There's still a decent group there but not like last weekend through Wednesday.

The Rock Island District had the eagle count on the 21st at 28 adults and 3 juveniles. I will probably wait till the third week to go out. Hopefully it gets cold and stays for a while.

Several dozen eagles stay around the area of the Monroe Power Plant, but they only have tours of the property once a winter and you have to win a lottery to be included.

I moved out of the area six years ago, but have seen bald eagles at Lake Erie Metropark when the only open water around was where the River Raisin flows into Lake Erie. I counted over a dozen eagles sitting in the trees near the parking lot. Of course, I was there cross-country skiing and didn't have any camera gear with me. vmad
