I'm planning on starting out with the 50mm 1.8 (nifty fifty) at first and see what happens. I down loaded the manual for it and have been reading up on the eye control thing. I don't know, but I'm thinking that I've gotten along with out it all this time, that why should I need it now. We'll see...

Yeah, I don't REALLY use it but I think it was fun to play with. Sometime when you have a little time to kill, I'd suggest setting it up and having a play. It's surprisingly good, but again I think it's more for fun than anything else personally.

I got the Elan 7e, I don't use the eye focus, it fails me from time to time, also I don't trust the outer focus point any more then in other Canon cameras with non cross type points.

I have an Elan IIe, and I turned the outer focus points off. I used to just focus using the main center point, then recompose. Never let me down that way.

The Captain and crew finally got their stuff together, now if we can only remember where we left it.

Center point focus and recompose has always been good enough for me, keep it simple I say...

Just saw Kentmere 400 asa 36 exposures at B&H for $3.95 a roll. Anyone shooting this? I'm thinking about giving it a try, the price is right, so worth a try...

I've had problems with their 100 speed film, basically the sprockets on the emulsion kept tearing. Had it happen in several cameras. I have some of their 400 but haven't shot it yet, picked it up back when they had it for $2.50 a roll.

I posted a bunch of photos shot on the film a couple of pages ago. I really liked it. It's pretty grainy, but I like that. It's made by the same people that make Ilford so I would assume there's pretty good quality control.

All the photos up until the one with the black boarder was on Kentmere. Nothing too phenomenal, just messing around to test the film.

Arista EDU 400 is a tad bit cheaper (I think), and it's the same exact film as Fomapan, but in a non-DXcoded roll. The leader seems almost hand cut. I bought some rolls of that when I ordered the Kentmere, but I haven't quite finished the roll yet. When I do I'll make sure to post them here!

Well, I'm puzzled as to 'resolving power'. The images I've taken so far don't look to me as sharp as those made with my digital camera. Wondering whether it's the lens, the camera, the exposure, the film or my developing. Or my scanning. Too many variables. :( vmad

In the days of film, the magazines used to do lens tests and lenses that could resolve about 64 line-pairs/mm were ranked as 'VGood' and lenses with 80 l-p/mm were 'Excellent', and lenses in the 100-120 lp/mm were 'superb' and very exceptional to read about.

Now we see MTF tests like the Canon 35mm f/2 on a 21MPixel camera body, with over 3100 line-pairs/picture height wide open and 3500 l-p/picture height at f/5.6

  • 3100 l-p/picture height = 129 line-pairs/mm at f/2
  • 3500 l-p/picture height = 146 line-pairs/mm at f/5.6

One might be tempted to say we are in the 'superb' part of the test range, if one could truly compare the test values. But enough uncertainty about the test conditions being comparable exists that it is probably dangerous to jump to that conclusion.]

Then there is the scanner...a flatbed like the Canonscan 8800F has 4800 dpi in its scan settings for film ...that is about 2400 line-pairs per picture height or 100 l-p/mm. At best it is 30% inferior to the Canon 35mm f/2 on 21 MPixel camera body!

Checked your Flicker out, and I like how it looks. I went ahead and ordered five rolls (the 20 bucks didn't hurt that bad, hahahah) and I'll give it a try. I like that grainy look anyway.. Hope it likes D-76, cause thats all I can get over here.

Yeah I was shooting HP5 before that, and rated at box speed it's a little boring looking IMO. I'm going around trying as many films as I can just to see if I can find something cool. Instead of ordering 10 more rolls of HP5, I ordered 10 more rolls of Kentmere 400. I have a roll of the 100 that I just loaded up too, I'm curious to see how that goes.

HP-5 has always been my go to film, with the usual pulling and pushing, but now for some reason I'm thinking why not try something else, who knows, maybe there's something better......plus with the price of film now, maybe I can save a dollar or two. Which means more film right?
