On color pic my attention spreads all over the photo - her face, what is in hand, butterfly to the right. . . On B&W my attention on body shape and face impression. All other details merging into background. So, I am for B&W.

Found some old RAWS from three or four years ago that I thought I'd deleted. Couple of really nice ones.

I really like this, very sharp, the lighting is excellent, and I like the black and white touch.

Thx for the compliments guys. That Xti did very well for me, which is why I was so happy to find a thousand old RAWs from it. Its now used by my 4 year old with a helios 44 on it, and still takes the occasional really nice one. Thanks again.

Question: when you guys use strobes to light outdoor scenes (or even just using reflectors), do you prefer to match the direction of the light to the direction of the sun, so that the entire scene looks more coherent and natural? Or do you guys not care, as long as the subject is exposed to a good balance against the brightness of the background?

Personally, I find it a challenge to achieve the prefect balance so that the foreground lighting being controlled by the photographer matches the lighting of the environment so that everything looks natural and coherent. Too often what I see is the foreground appearing a bit too bright and losing the sense of natural coherency our eyes are used to seeing in real-life. It can work for certain aesthetic effects though, such as purposely highlighting the subject against the background, but it's a very distinct and intentional look that doesn't always fit.

I know that this question is quite old, but I just found the thread...

I try to "extend" the sunlight's direction. ie: if the sun is at 10 o'clock over the right shoulder of my model, I put my strobe at 7 o'clock. Putting it at 4-5 o'clock confuses one's mind. You like the shot, but your brain tells you that something is wrong with the light, even though you don't consciously know why.

Here are two examples of that theory:

Does that help?

Oh.. and to qualify with the thread, my wife and I in the second shot ;)
