My sole purpose today... BIF's with the EM-1 and the 50-200 SWD. I'm not well practiced at this, but can be done. (The 50-200 is not available in the metadata, this is not the 40-150).

Australian Pelican in flight, taken on Moreton Island some 40km across the bay from Brisbane. They have a wingspan of some 2.3 m - 2.5 m with a bill that is 40 cm - 50 cm long.

I am still astonished when I see these huge birds take off and fly, it just doesn’t seem possible given their size.:-)

Cheers

Dennis

I'm always amazed when I see pics like these because of how effortless they seem to hang in the air, big birds they are! Your second shot is great.

Same here. I have many flight photos of white pelicans including takeoffs and landings and I think the same thing each time.....

From http://www.birdsinbackyards.net …/Pelecanus-conspicillatus (external link)

"Pelicans are not capable of sustained flapping flight, but can remain in the air for 24 hours, covering hundreds of kilometres. They are excellent soarers and can use thermals to rise to considerable altitudes. Flight at 1,000m is common, and heights of 3 000 m have been recorded. By moving from one thermal to the next, pelicans can travel long distances with a minimum of effort, reaching air speeds of up to 56 km/hour".

Cheers

Dennis

Most large birds use thermals. During migration you can see large flocks circling up and then soaring away. Pretty cool way to travel. :-P
