Absolutely atrocious conditions today at Fernhill Wetlands Nature Reserve in Forest Grove, OR. Heavily overcast with driving rain that just let up for an hour thankfully when we were there. It was a good birding day though - 36 species seen.

500/4 II with 1.4X III on a 7D2.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Sometimes (so very few in my case  ) you're able to get the framing just right in camera which allows for no cropping in post.

My son and I managed to make it to the Oregon Coast yesterday to see the common scoter that is hanging out at Lincoln City. This is a Code 5 ABA rarity, the highest rating for rare species. It is normally not found east of central Siberia and is only the 2nd sighting ever of this bird in North America. Birders from all over the continent have made the pilgrimage here to see it!

It was a ways out from the shore, so the photo isn't great, but I wanted to share nonetheless.

We also saw the tropical kingbird that has been spotted there and sure enough, it was still there. This is uncommon, although there a few that somehow make it to the PNW every year. Strangely enough, we see more of the tropical kingbirds west of the Cascades, rather than the western kingbirds that are found in Eastern Oregon. I guess coming up from the south is easier than crossing the mountains to the west. Got a couple of decent shots of the bird.

Finally, we saw lots of red phalaropes at Boiler Bay. They are of course not in breeding plumage at this time. The best shots were in the grassy areas next to the parking lot! :)

All were shot with the 7D2 and the 500/4 II with a 1.4X III. Thanks for looking!

In checking the images for this lens in 2016, there were 14 pages of entrees but none of them were of sports. I'd have thought there would be at least a few since 400mm on a 1.3 crop camera was popular (1.3 x 400 = 520), now with full frame cameras I'd have expected to see 500mm lenses due to the lighter weight and greater reach. Do you guy think it is due to this lens being f/4.0? I can understand that for those shooting at night but what about daytime shooters? I guess that with both college and pros playing at night occasionally you would have to own an f/2.8 lens. What do you guys think? Is there another reason that I'm not thinking of? Bokeh?

Not sure why. Could it be that 500mm is a bit too long for most fields when shooting from the sideline? Not being a sports shooter, that's the only thing I can think of.
