Got a 50mm 1.8 STM today for some cheap fun, surprised how nice it is.

Missed you guys. The OMD M1 mk II, the EOS M5, and the a99ii all came over the last two weeks and I didn't know which way
to turn :)
Here is my last posted from this year's Conowingo trip---already looking forward to next year.

Julian I needed the M5 like I need another hole in the head ;)

But it's cute/fun/lightweight and the sensor is really nice=pixel density is a good thing.
My goal was to hook it up with a 400/5.6 which came about 3 weeks prior to the M5's arrival
and I re-acquainted with the 400/5.6 on the 1DXii at Conowingo and enjoyed it.

The M5's AF is elementary/rudimentary-me comparing to the Oly M1ii's which is really top of the
line for mirrorless. We have a6000 and a6300 and despite Dual Pixel the Sonys still win
for AF-tracking--but this is Canon's first real try at mirrorless in my opinion and I think the M6
and M7 will get on with that.

Biggest narly with the M5 is when you hit the playback button plan on two seconds
before seeing your last shot!
Second narly is I can't get back button focus comfortably with the M5, the buttons just don't land
where I would want them.

Comfort=OK, not as good as the Olympus which has the deep grip to wrap your fingers around. But better
than the a6000/a6300. I've shot lots over the last year with a GX8 and prefer the DSLR like form factor
of the M5 over the rangefinder style of the GX8.

7fps is nice and I agree with the famous Kai that panning BIF/sports won't be a problem (I've only practiced on
running dogs) but BIF/sports running staight at you will be a problem.

Have I said too much? My goal really was just for the 400/5.6 and in that regard total success. Better AF-tracking
would have been nice but years ago I'd adapt the 400/5.6 on a Sony Nex-7 (similar pixel density) and loved the weight
and it was manual focus :( Now I have this supper compact wieldable wildlife rig so I'm happy. I've goofed around with
the 400DOii on it and it just wasn't comfortable but the M5 is a lightweight plan B no doubt about that; but for me
the 400/5.6 will live on the M5.

OK, sorry if that was TMI.
Robert

p.s. best touch screen I've ever seen---makes me wonder why Canon even bothered with on on the 1DXii ???

I just picked up a 5D4 (like I need more gear. I'm such an idiot. ). But the touch screen on that is nice. Too bad they can't firmware update it for the 1DX2. That would be awesome.

I don't know why but so far, testing the video focusing... it seems the 1DX2 is still better than the 5D4. But I could be doing something wrong. I'm probably doing something wrong. But I like the 5D4. I think I'll be keeping that one for a very long time.

Thanks for the info on the M5. Shame Canon couldn't get it right. I mean you'd think they'd get it right on the 3rd try! (It's the 3rd iteration, right? M, M3, M5?) I don't remember if there was an M2. :D

Can someone recommend me case settings for Wildlife? I am getting some really depressing results with Birds in Flight. I almost feel like my 7D Mark II did better. -?
