I shot this (of my daughter) back in May shortly after picking up a Canon 10-18mm lens. I had never shot volleyball using such a wide lens before. I've always used my 85mm or 70-200mm. I am pretty happy with the result.

Anyone else shoot wide for volleyball?

Occasionally, but not often.

I like it for jube shots:

Compelling action shots are more difficult to come by shooting wide:

It's still "Shoot tight, crop tighter" for the general rule.

Great work guys. At my volleyball games, the refs won't let me get close enough to get those shots.

The general problem with wide angle action shots is illustrated by rhuel's image and my image #4. When the player is close to you on the sideline, you get a spectacular view of his/her athleticism. Her jump seems really high but her face is looking in the opposite direction (rhuel's example). If the player is on the far side of the court then you can see her face but she appears a long way away and the athleticism is diminished (my image 4). My image #5 is of player #6 during a jump serve. It was my best attempt of trying to appreciate her leaping ability while seeing part of her face. Unfortunately, the ball is usually well above the player because, at impact, the players right arm will obscure her face. Volleyball is tough!

BTW, she went on to play for Wichita State and made it to the NCAA final 8. The girl has Ups!

that would be a fun photo to show their coach. Just to see who is playing and ready for a block or not :-)

I feel very ignorant in my own world, never considered using a wide for sports. Thanks!
