Sadly when winter comes most of my subjects depart here (Birds just dont stay where I live unfortunately, flowers are dead) so all I really have, at the moment, is Luna to take pictures of...

A question: have any of you had both the f/4 and the f/2.8 IS II? I'm trying to decide between the two. I know about the weight and cost, of course.... trying to determine the actual shooting advantages of an f/2.8 vs f/4. The only f/2.8 lens I have is the 100 Macro IS and I do find it beneficial.

I'll be using it mostly for shots with people in them. I use my 100-400 ii for wildlife.

Any suggestions or comments would be welcome.

To me the f/2.8 has that noticeable edge in isolation VS the f/4... the f/4 was never quite enough to me on an APS-C DSLR and wasnt enough to differentiate it VS the 150-600 speed-wise

You can always stop the f/2.8 down for a little more dof, you cannot open up a f/4 any more than f/4

Yeah.... that's my thinking as well. I'll be ordering one a bit later this month if things go as planned.

For this lens range almost all voting for f2.8II, even with 24-70, while with 16-35 they choose f4 over f2.8, so is it the speed or sharpness or it depends?

The only disadvantage is the weight and size. Many say it is painful to work with the 2.8 the whole day which I can also confirm however I still stick to my 2.8 as I need the speed and the aperture. But several of my professional photographer friends who are shooting weddings stopped using the 2.8 and switched to either the 4 version or some prime lenses.

Heavy compared to what? Come on. I'm 50, not muscular and 25lbs over weight. The 2.8 is easy to cary all day. As easy as plastic kit lens no. But for a professional lens. It is fine. The right question to ask is do I want a compromised lens for less money? Do I want to only get good pictures in good light? If so the f4 is a good choice. It is about image quality and lens use not weight with a smallish lens.

Quite simply, it's the most versatile and sought after lens in Canon's arsenal. Image quality is second to none, and the only real discerning factor in choosing should be budget.

Agree. 85mm f/1.2, 135mm f/2 is the best choice.
