I got this lens from my dad for Christmas, and I am enjoying it so far, what is the general opinion of the lens? I am not going to complain about free gear! But I just wondered how it stacks up as a wide-angle lens to others. I didn't see a lot of mention of the brand so far (in my limited searches here)

Just remember it has several names. Samyang, Rokinon, Bower, and several other names too. If you search for the lens, it may be listed under one of the other names.

Does the TF actually know about the soda cans and PVC pipe from 30 years ago?

I was not aware of that. I will do some more checking.

That topic is over 300 pages. Would be where to start, anyway.
I have an 8mm and a 14mm 2.8. They are fun lens.

Excellent lens. Some copies have decentering and some copies have backlash on the focus ring. Not a big deal IMO. Just slap it on and start shooting. There are some fantastic shots in the lens photo archive section for this lens.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Well regarded for astrophotography.

Some reviewers are more critical of the lens for daylight work.

Some nice shots in the Flickr pools

Don't get hung up on reviews. There is no shortage of excellent images from the lens.

I actually used it today to get a shot of my mini-drone taking off, as I couldn't seem to get my timing correct on my regular lenses and still have it in the frame.

I am also enjoying it for outdoor nighttime pictures and will try to take more (once its not 15 degrees)

I have one. I have mostly used it for nighttime shooting of stars and cityscapes. It works great.

If you use Lightroom be sure that you have the lens profile for it and use it. It corrects the distortion the lens has very nicely.

I have this lens and like it a lot. In several landscape trips I've carried (only) this lens and the 24mm tilt-shift and been totally happy.

I might not have the correct profile in LR, because I still see some distortion on scenes that have many straight lines. The problem is that there's some slight mustache distortion (harder to correct than a pure barrel or pincushion type).

But for landscapes the distortion (with correction) is acceptable (for me).

Mostly using 5D3 with lots of different lenses and flash, but also still using a large format 4x5 film camera.

I absolutely LOVE mine, especially on a full frame DSLR.
