Thanks David. It isn't all fun though. I crashed my P3P on Christmas Day trying to do a Litchi Waypoint mission of about 6km. I only got about 200 meters from my start point. Something was off with my calibration because I'm positive the app said I was at 50 meters but who would have thought the tree was about 52 meters? So that's either a really tall tree or my calibration was off.

My VLOG of the incident including the crash.

I fly at 2x the tallest tree. Sounds like operator error.

I'm no drone expert, but will try to answer your question.

At least for both Mavic Pro and P4P, they communicate via GPS (outdoors) and ATTI mode (indoors). As for range, it really depends on where you are flying. Sometimes, my bird will fly 5000 ft with no problem and sometimes it would fly less than 1000 ft and will warn me with "weak image transmission signal". I have yet to fly in the middle of nowhere where the range should shine, so I can't say too much about range. I did order the range extender from ebay, to see if it would actually boost my range.

They do not communicate via GPS. No matter where or what your flying in the communication is done over a 2.4ghz and/or 5ghz signal depending on what model. It's WIFI frequencies which is why when you are in a city enviroment and/or around trees and such your distance capability goes down. If you are on the beach away from any signal you can actually go out for miles and miles and miles without losing signal. The P3's use GPS and glonass for locating it's location where the P4P uses dual GPS systems for even better accuracy.

But the RC link is via 2.4/5ghz signaling pure and simple.

No worries... it is confusing and took me a bit to really figure it out.

That to me is the most amazing part... it's some really sophisticated stuff in these things.

,
I wonder if they'll discount it to get sales going after such bad press on the crashes.

Considering there was high wind (and with constant wind warnings), this image turned out not too bad. Not the sharpest but still not bad for 2.5sec exposure at ISO100 f2.8. This was shot using tripod mode.

Tripod mode?

I want to die peacefully, in my sleep, like my grandfather.
Not screaming, terrified, like his passengers.

Tripod mode?

From the above web site

"This is the #1 feature that I am loving on the MAVIC.... TRIPOD MODE. Here is what it is:"

"There is also a new Tripod Mode that drops Mavic Pro’s maximum speed to just 2.2 mph (3.6 km/h) and reduces the sensitivity of the control inputs, to allow precision positioning for photography as well as to make it easier to fly indoors or in other confined spaces."\\
