yeah caught my attention..

decided to sell my M4/3 setup .. loved it , nice and light could cary all day long .,.especcially for travel ,street photography in good light ..but i hate dreading iso 1600

been wanting the xt2 , but its not exactly small ,
now the xt20 looks just about the perfect size ...same sensor as xt2 and with that touch screen convinced me.. not weather sealed its seems?/.. well that might be the only thing that keeps me from it .. not sure

E-M5 was great, E-M1 the best camera ever!!

didn't like the sensor in E-M1 (especially the weird 4/3 aspect ratio, but the camera itself was the best ever created! (E-M1 II is probably better now)

Ok will try to break this down in 2 posts.

This is my personal take on the 70-200 2.8 GM.

First disclosures. 1. I am a very amateur photog so anything I say should be take with a grain of salt. 2. I live in AZ where it is always sunny and nice......... EXCEPT for the days I had the lens... very low dark clouds with fast moving storms. 3. I did my tests on the 6500 because that is where this lens would live in my bag so sorry for the A7 lounge 6500 review but I still think most peeps want to know about the lens. 4. I was really testing out the 70-200 and 2x combo on some birds to see how it would work so bias again for subject matter

So on to my nonsense.

70-200 2.8

Looks 10 - this thing just looks nice .... i know its just a lens but its a sexy lens!

Feel 9 - Solid... it is a tank but not unmanagable. I flipped it to manual a few times and it is just a finger focus gentle lamb but when you need it to rock it does

Size / Weight - 6 - It looks not that much bigger than the f/4 but it is a heavy beast did i say heavy.... HEAVY! there.... however it balanced well with the 6500 very well... The Hood is another story it is huge big in the way big and looks too damn big for the lens... just sayin.

Focus speed 9 - Insane. Just Insane. Grabbed focus 90+% of the time and stuck with the 6500 tracking smooth and fast was really easy

Color / CA -8 - no complaints. Took it to the botanical gardens did some back lit fine line shots that always CA on my 55 1.8 and no CA

Bokah - 6 - When its buttery its very buttery smooth and nice.... BUT more often i got the dreaded busy background ....even more than my 70-300. And was hit or miss but when its buttery its buttery

Here are some shots

As a landscape long lens - 9 - I think it has great detail

starting to see busy background but this is acceptable to me

All in all I wanted this lens to replace my FE90 2.8 macro and FE 7-300 even possibly my 55 1.8. - I think it could do that... however my goal here also was to just add the 2x and get it to 400 thus really cleaning out my bag.... I will do a 2x post in a bit but it would not work for me that way. So is this worth the $2600 US ... I said in my mini post it will depend on the user. I loved shooting it at 2.8 I think the pics were superb at 2.8 and thus if you need 2.8 and native then yes. But I do miss my f/4 which was wayyyyyy less expensive lighter and very good. Ultimately if I had money I would buy it. I dont have enough to make the stretch and it didnt GAS me up.

My 2cents

Ok follow up on the 70-2002.8 GM

Here is my review on the 2x TC that goes with the GM

spoiler version read no further - It is a typical 2x TC that has all the issues you would think but at a VERY expensive price tag. - Dont buy it.

More detailed version

I had such hopes I really thought wow I could just carry this lens and the TC in my pocket and have the best of all worlds. But it was not to be. Let me start with my disclaimer from my previous review

I suck at photog so dont take my word. It was dark clouldy days when testing. I tested it on my 6500 too bad if your mad about this on the A7 forum.

So lets do some good

size = small good - attaching to lens = easy no problems - it has an extended end that goes into the lens so this is one of the reasons it wont work with other lenses. I tried to put it on the 70-300 but it would have extended into the glass

Other good things= Focus - Insane really no loss of focus vs the lens with no TC it was spot on tracked well even in low light and was truly amazing kudos / sharp at times

Bad - muddy / bad backgrounds I mean really bad / and doughnut hole bokah / cost

I have to reinforce it was a dark day I had to up the ISO and shoot at 5.6 focusing was great but when I went to process I was less impressed. (Photog ability probably played some in here but some of these probs are not all me)

Here is a great shot sharp focus but look to the left of the bill and on the stick you will see doughnut holes

here is sharp on the birds but look at the top background

Here is BIF my big test with a busy background and the focus was easy peasy so it is very capable at times

Again capable at times

It can do it but not consistantly When you price this and the lens out your at about $3200 USD and well thats a lot of dough. Taking on and off the TC all day became routine and easy... I have a large Ziess cloth and so it was twist off wrap put in pocket reverse etc. Not till the end of the day did I miss time my switch and get a boatload of dust on the sensor.

In the end there are too many wrongs with this combo to make it right especially for the money. Course I was reaching for a bit of a holy grail so it could be my expectations were too high.

You can see more examples on my flickr page where I just slam up way too many pics .... Pics were taken in Willcox AZ during a Sandhill Crane festival and I took a side trip to the Chicirahua National Monument as well as the next day hitting up the Phoenix Botanical Gardens.

^ Thank you for the review and for sharing the images. Looks like the lens is a very solid performer albeit a heavy one.

Travis, my black and white bridge shot got Explore yesterday. I changed my approach. I posted it early in the morning, added relevant tags, a description, and only added it 4 or 5 groups that were active. I avoided the big groups like Daily Flickr Images for example. Very interesting.

raising price every generation doesn't work... eventually people get pissed off and camera sales keep falling every year.

5D IV is better then 5D III, but it was introduced at the same price as previous model, in this case, Canon didn't double the price.

If the a7III is a full frame a6500 it will be more than a typical generational upgrade....It will be a higher caliber camera overall.

The a7II is basically a 6D competitor....A full frame a6500 would basically be a 5DIV killer. You really have to think in terms of the feature set and not necessarily in terms of this being a simple update to an existing camera.

I do think Sony need to make a cheaper a6 series camera, aimed at the likes of the 6D as the a7 is more targeted towards the 5D series cameras.

Posting early in the morning, 4-5 groups that are just collections with no requirement to favorite, comment or invite, 1600 on the long side and waiting at least 9 days from your last Explored image all help. Being active in commenting and favoriting other images helps, going through your contacts and the explore page and doing the same helps...for those of us that dont have 3k or 4k or more followers, good images garner more attention...but its not a requirement.

If I read right it has better communication with the stabilization in the sony's and has a stable on off switch
