2x never leaves the lens. focus speed and acquisition never an issue on 1dx ii with this lens. all my images sofar with this lens are with 2x.
expect the same with 5d iv.
only issue is when light is really low, you have to crank up the iso as you are always at F8. (course i am stating the obvious)

You guys keep saying the original 400mm DO f4 IS is too soft, doesn't have as good an IS and so on. I contend, if you have a good copy, it can do OK for you.

Thanks for the share! The original DO definitely holds its own; the photos are even more crispy if you view them on Flickr vs. here.

Well, one of them should be more crispy because I added some sharpness. Both have been edited slightly for contrast on the Flickr site.

This lens is super sharp on the 80D.

Indeed, you can count every feather.

I did some trading and selling. Now I have the new DO. So far not particularly impressed. Images still need post processing. Image Stabilization seems pretty good I hope I don't end of regretting the impulse. Both of these are full frame.

Here, then, the Sony a7R II, MC 11 adapter, Canon 2x TC III and 400mm DO IS II on monopod. Both these images are extensive crops.

Now a full frame with a crop. No other editing.
