Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM

Lol for that price I'd just look for the Canon one. It's the ET-73B. You likely can find it on the Canon online store.

That's just it...I don't want to spend $60 on a lens hood. I got a great deal on the lens and don't want to lose on that value by paying way too much on the hood. I plan on buying the tripod collar since I don't like where the focus ring is placed and that's going to be expensive since it too, is way overpriced.

? You somehow paid $600 on a lens that now costs what, maybe $1,500 (I'm not checking), and you don't want to pay $60 extra in case it wipes out the savings that you've made on the lens? How could this happen?

What I paid for the lens is irrelevant to the ridiculous asking price for Canon brand lens hoods(accessories in general). I bought the JJC generic for my 35f2IS and it works perfectly. Cost.. $10. But the only ones I see for the 70-300 are white and I don't want those. I will not pay $60 for a replacement plastic lens hood.

Also, 3 70-300L have sold on ebay w/in the last 2 days between $625-725. And those came with everything as new, 2 included UV filters and the other had a tripod collar.
Current retail is $1350

Question for you. Can you comfortably hold the lens under the collar(palm) and zoom(finger and thumb) at the same time? I took the lens out yesterday with my 5yr on her bike to get some shots. Two things I found. One,I realized quickly that I kept putting my support hand on the focus ring and I don't like that. And when trying to support the lens at the zoom ring for purposes of zooming while in AI Servo, It felt awkward and I missed more images. and...Two, it's definitely not as long as I would like(may end up trading for 400f5.6 which I loved when I loaned it from CPS) and not being able to add the 1.4x w/o risk of damaging back element is a major bummer.
Definitely a positive note on this lens. It focuses really damn fast! Not close focus distances either, I mean from the wall at the end of parking lot to my daughter on her bike was basically instantaneous which was well over a 200ft difference.

This image was one of my favorites on a few test runs as I wanted to see how this lens's AF keeps up with zooming out while in AI Servo. One thing to point out is when using the 5d3 and selecting ONLY cross points active, you only get the center strip when using a lens with f5.6. So I had to turn on all points to get a focus point high enough in portrait orientation to use during my test. That's a bummer.

Went to the zoo this morning. Pretty much made up my mind that this lens is too short for my needs, how I want to use it. I will most likely sell it or trade it for the 400f5.6.

There's a large caged area where you can walk in with some of the birds. There is where I got a few images that I liked.

I haven't forgotten the 70-300L, in fact I've been using it a bit lately but on the EOS M5. I find the combo
wonderful for size/weight. The M5 + 70-300L also works a charm at all FLs with snappy AF using a Kenko
1.4 TC....few zooms do anywhere near this with a TC (at this price point I should add) and I was quite surprised. Of course IQ always takes a hit
with TCs but it is another tool to have in the pocket. The little M5 also AFs with the Kenko 2.0TC but the IQ hit is large.

Pretty cool. I was at a birding festival today and got to play with all the Canon toys, as CPS was there. The M5 is a cool little camera, wish it wasn't so expensive.

It is overpriced for a mirrorless with it's capabilities save one thing--it will AF with EF/EF-S lenses and that says a lot. It is a back up for your 7Dii that will fit in a pant cargo pocket AND I was truly surprised how well it did with that Kenko. I also added the Kenko for the a99ii and it did not fare so well, focus was snappy but IQ is not there.

Ed, the last two versions of the M were less than half the new retail price on the Canon refurb site by the following Christmas season after release. It's doubtful that this one will drop that much but I can't see it holding it's value anywhere near what the dslrs do since the lens selections SUCKS. It's currently at $980 at B&H but not listed on the refurb site as of yet. I would not be surprised to see it at $550-600 by December. And if that's the case, I will be buying it then, but not any sooner. There's only 1 fast prime, 2 primes total and no constant aperture zooms. f3.5-6.3 for a 24-70mm equivalent? Give me a break canon! I realize you can adapt ef(-s) lenses onto it but honestly, I have no interest in doing that outside of necessity. It completely negates the purpose of having such a small form factor. And until they change that, it'll only be a nice accessory, never a real contender in a product line FULL of better options across brands.

Medicine man, I don't know what you do for a living that allows you the luxury of buying all these toys but don't stop! haha. I've been enjoying all your posts on several different lens sample threads.
