I'm getting ready to spring for a Nikon 750 with a couple extra lenses. My retirement gift to my self, LOL!! What is the general opinion of the "Damage Protection Packages" offered by companies like Adorama and others. Is it worth the expense? Anyone have experience with these packages?

Read the fine print very, very carefully.

Those kind of offers are usually along the lines of the "extended warranty" scams that some retailers spruik as often as they can and which have so many caveats they'll almost never be any practical use.

Sorry I have never heard of these packages.

My gear is covered "All risks" anywhere on the planet as part of my house insurance. This does not appear to cost any extra and covers about £25K ($31K?) of gear.

I did look into dedicated camera insurance but it was cheaper to insure the house + contents as well!

I don't know if they operate in your area but this was done through Santander Bank.

The ONLY time I have ever done it was for a "Harbor Freight" power tool.
They either work just fine for as long as you need, or they don't.

It's very rare I will buy such crap, but on occasion the economics is hard to argue with (buying a jack hammer that I can use all summer for the same price as renting one for a day)

Those protections from retailers are garbage and should never be purchased.
If anything were to go wrong with the equipment, you will generally notice it well within the return/exchange policy or even under manufacturer's warranty. Stuff you can really do to damage the cameras are not covered under those protection plan from retailers anyways.

Only time you might want to take a insurance would be if you are traveling to or taking photos from a risk environments.
And, that insurance should be taken out through a reputable insurance company.

I have read about some professional photographers taking photos on the edge of canyon and dropping their camera.
Eventually they were able to get their camera replace, but they still had to jump through hoops with the insurance agency.
So even with insurance, it's not always easy to get your equipment replaced.

They are great,,,for the retailer ! I believe they refer to ext warranties as are gravy train. Credit cards sometimes give extent ed coverage,!, if you happen to have one of these,,much cheaper,,provided you pay before due date.

Forget the "Damage Protection" policy. You would be better off spending your money to make sure your gear is covered with a real insurance policy through your homeowners policy or a rider... and it will most likely save you money.

Photography is all about problem solving.
Having a nice camera doesn't make you a photographer any more than lying in a parking lot will make you a car.
