Christ of the Wichitas

In 1975 the Holy City, located in the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, erected a eleven-foot-tall, white marble statue titled Christ of the Wichitas. This statue was dedicated in memory of Rev. Wallock, the creator of the iconic Easter Pagaent that is an annual production at the WPA facility located here.

In 1981 the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed suit, demanding removal of religious items from federal land.

A federal judge dismissed the case.

Butterbridge, with freshly snow-covered mountains in the background. I'd been on a nearby mountain earlier that morning and the ice had only just melted off my tripod by the time I got to the bridge!
