Been meaning to put this in this thread...

Came home after a long drive and watched this guy fly into the tree next to the house--told him to stay put while I ran to get the camera. I'm glad he could understand me!

He was close--this isn't cropped.

Joined the club! Received my 100-400 II late yesterday and popped outside my house this morning for a few shots. Using a 7D and will later try the 5DIII. This gent paid a visit to my house this morning. Sandhill crane. They travel in pairs and mate was out of the frame. I have a lot to learn in terms of using this lens. I know my 7D is a little more challenging than the 7DII that I hope to acquire before a summer Alaska trip. But was disappointed with the focus I was seeing on my 7D out of the gate. I believe the lens is awesome, however, and look forward to learning it inside and out!

After a lot of pressure from my wife, I'm selling the flat (apartment) that I've let out for the last 7 years, this means my 500 f4 had to go! So Thursday, I have a nice, hopefully shiny, new to me 100-400ii turning up.....although it may be a step back in a few respects, I'm looking forward to greater portability, zoom range and improved IS.

Hopefully I'll have something to put up here soon as we're off to Lyme Regis for the weekend in a few days and I'm hoping to shoot some compressed landscapes (The Cobb specifically http://www.lymeregis.org/the-cobb.aspx (external link))

Hope I can keep the thread standard up!

Not sure where to post this, as it concerns both the lens and the camera.

I have some IQ issues, mainly sharpness, when using this lens - 100-400 II with the 7D M2. I tried to do AF MA using DotTune, using FoCal, and both show that the setting should be around +1 (means it is spot on). I decided to ship them to Canon for calibration, plus to add a Canon 1.4x III TC.

What is the best way to pack the three for shipping? Should I have both the lens and the TC mounted on the camera? Or should I pack all three items separately and ship in a single box? Have anybody done that? I have shipped cameras and lenses for repairs before, but always separately. Any suggestion?

I would bubble wrap each item separately.

I have never shipped more than one item but when I do it is usually in the original container with all the stuff it came with. I put a lens or camera in a zip lock back before it goes into the container. I then place it in a larger shipping box with bubble wrap on all sides. You get a good buffer area just in case.

When I have received new gear and there is more that one container they usually have the boxes side by side surrounded padded shipping paper or bubble wrap.

According to FoCal my 7D2 and 100-400 II needs +2 at 100mm and +4 at 400mm. However when I put my 1.4 III on it goes +4 at 140mm and +13 at 560mm. This was consistent on my 5D3 and is consistent on my 5D4. FoCal will not play nicely with Mac Sierra and they are waiting for Canon to release their updated software libraries which should be soon. I just entered my 5D3 values to the 5D4 and it is spot on.

This tells me the TC is causing it to go out which I'm too worried about because the lens and cam are close. Archibald has the same +13 value for his TC has well.

I read up about TC's by Roger Cicala from lens rentals and he said that TC's are actually tuned for long primes. We use them with zooms and they work fine. Our lenses are listed to work with one. It probably explains why it needs that much. It won't be the same for all 100-400 II lenses but I though this info might be helpful as you are trying to solve your issue.

Good luck.
