I have mostly been a zoom guy, but have started to pick up fast primes. Just ordered one of these from the Canon Refurb site for $90. At that price it almost seems silly not to have one.

Will be used on my 5D4 and M5

Hi all, question for you is, are using or does it need a lens hood. I broke my lens 50mm 1.8 ii (i had no hood) and am thinking about replacing it, not sure if i need to get a lens hood with it or not. Does anybody find it a benefit? Will be using it on 80D.
I was thinking about getting a 50mm 1.4 but this 1.8 is so cost effective and excellent value for money... hard to go past!

Love this lens and have no desire for the f/1.4 old version. I got a 3rd party lens hood from amazon for under $10. Will help keep out stray light and serves as a level of protection for the front element.

Refurb is the way I go!!! Usually I will wait for a great deal from Canon. How can you go wrong with a one year warranty.

Absolutely. I always use lens hoods, even when not needed. Just an added layer of protection. I bought mine for $1.09 US from Aliexpress (external link) because when I bought the lens right after it was announced, the hoods were on back order for MONTHS. Eventually, I ended up with a legit Canon ES-68 hood as well as my knock off and quite honestly... there is virtually zero difference other than the fact that my knock off was missing the "Canon" badge. I bought a box of 10 and sold the remaining 9 for $10 each online since they were on back order for so long. They sold like skittles. Food for thought ;)

What a bargain! At that price you can't go wrong such cheap protection. I dont need a canon badge:-)Thanks for the info.

Exactly! That's like the tripod collar I bought for my EF 70-200 f/4L IS USM. You'd think a $1200 lens would come with a tripod collar if it is necessary to use one. But NOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I got one off amazon for 20 bucks. I'm not gonna pay $150 for something that should have come with the damn lens in the first place! Only difference between it and the "official" canon one is it doesn't say "canon" anywhere on it. The color is an almost perfect match however. That was more important.
