Here's a Cardinal from me, Medicine Man, so you won't feel like the only one overrun by the lovely red critturs.
On a side note, I've been working to get the color right for these guys in processing. Seems Canon really likes to saturate and make reds more orange (shooting in RAW and using neutral settings in-camera) Do you think I added too much blue after desaturating the red? It's a bit closer...but still seems more orange than "cardinal red" to me.

I believe your absolutely right PhotosGuy......It is a mistake I tend to often make. I get into a habit of pushing the sharpness a few digits to the right rather when I should be knocking the sharpness down a few digits.

Most times I do this without even looking at the photo's ........I sometimes forget how sharp the 500/f4 is. With these birds, they landed on twigs about 4 metres from me, I had to step back to get them in focus.

Thanks for pointing this out to me.

It's nice to know that somebody thinks I was right once yesterday! ; D
Did you know that, by selecting, you can choose what's sharpened & what's not? Selection for sharpening illustration.

Of course, there are always more than one way to do things in PS. For instance, Three pages on Layer Masks (external link)
You can dupe the image, sharpen it, & then hide the parts that you don't want the sharpening to apply to. Or the reverse of that.

Hoffmann's Woodpecker, Costa Rica. Very similar to our Red-bellied, but with yellow markings.

This one needs to be metal printed 4 feet x 6 feet and hanging on some really big executives office wall (and a check made out to you
for say 10 grand!)

Don't you think this one would work better?

Love this, the entire mood is brilliant including the bird's posture and that beautiful canvas like background. Hang it somewhere :)

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. See what you think. I only took these shots because this Turkey Vulture was close (20 meters), so he filled the frame. In addition, the strong wind created an unusual pose. As often happens, when I looked at the sequence on my computer, two images, taken just 100 milliseconds apart, were quite different. It was late morning but a high, thin haze softened the sun a bit, so the colors turned out nicely.. Lots of these birds are present, out on the Katy Prairie this time of year. A windy day really makes them soar.

This with a clear, bright eye.

The next image in the continuous sequence, showing the nictitating membrane covering his eye.

These were handheld, out the SUV window. I did not shut off the engine, as I usually try to remember to do. Very slightly cropped and resized for the forum server.
