Just wanted to share this as I don't see it often. This is American AA79 LHR --> DFW at 34k ft flying into its own contrail shadow.

That's pretty tripped out.

Just trying to picture how this can happen......so is the sun to our left?

Very cool picture.

Yes, the plane had just passed in front of the sun which is to camera left. Here's (external link) an article about them - this one is type 3 the Edge Shadow. I think I've only seen this phenomenon once before.

Quite a few planes passed to the north-west in the following 30 minutes but they all missed going directly between me and the sun and I didn't see the shadow again.

Nice set Stephen, I see you were braving the 37 deg C (99F) temperatures today!:-)

Where did you position yourself and was that Runway 19 or 01?

Cheers

Dennis

Nice set and good looking airplane but I bet that the a/c on that plane works hard to keep it cool!

Thanks Dennis! I was out in the car doing a couple of weekend jobs and knew that this was arriving, so I detoured past the airport... only stayed for about 10 minutes though because it was already getting hot. These were taken from Da Vinci Boulevard, which is a good spot for 01 arrivals. In hindsight I should have driven further east along Lomandra Drive and shot the sunlit side of the plane, but I was running short of time!

Cheers,
Stephen

Thanks Curt! Yes, it's a good looking livery but it must absorb a lot of heat, especially in weather like this!
