If it's like the 35L II it will definitely be pricey and slightly beat the Art in performance, just may not be worth the justification of double the price for everyone

As long as your body/lens combination doesn't have focus consistency issues that is. I bought a 50 ART, it was **** amazing when it nailed focus. However, only nailing focus 30% of the time didn't inspire confidence to earn it's keep in my kit. I'd gladly pay double for a lens that was just as sharp and nailed focus 95% of the time. I haven't tried the 85 Art, so I can't judge. Based on the reviews, if it nailed focus with my 7dii, I'd be a buyer in a heartbeat. Otherwise, I'm going to hold out for an 85 /1.4 from canon that will.

QC and copy variance is a major issue for Sigma IMO. I have the 85mm EX lens and had the 50mm EX. The first copy I had of the 50 was so bad not even calibration from Sigma could fix it so I got a refund. The second one was really great on my 6D but was very inconsistent on my 550D. My 85mm EX is spot on for AF and tack sharp so there's no way I'm giving it up. I remember tests on the 35L II and 11-24L showed there was very little to no copy variance so I would personally find that a huge reason to purchase an 85L IS over the Art.

Has anyone used the Sigma 85 1.4 Art hand held I was just wondering with the lack of IS if they thought that IS would be an added plus or wasn't all that much needed.

At f/1.4 and only 85mm, you're going to be hard pressed with any modern camera to be ISO limited. 400mm at f/2.8 is two stops slower on aperture and two stops needed from field of view. That being said, if you have **** light, well you're going to have difficulty in the art of capturing light no matter if you have IS or not.

If I had the spare cash my 1.8G would be on the block. Quite disappointed with it's focussing speed, AF consistency and sharpness
