Thanks very much, Tim.

It's really surprisingly hard to get decent pics. The reflections, the special lightning of the objects and paintings, the other people getting in the way and of course having to shoot wide open so you have no depth of field plus having to shoot at impossibly low shutter speeds because it's so dark. I'm surprised the shots came out as good as they did, to be honest. Only a small amount that were real rubbish.

I'll be posting more shots tomorrow.

Ah, but I took the Nifty shots specifically for this thread, Tony, so I'm not posting them anywhere else. However, a dedicated museum thread could work well. I mean, people go to museums all the time, so why not, eh?

The lighting in the museum is pretty awful. I tried with my 7D when we were there and ended up with better pictures from my iPhone.
I think you've done very well with you images, Levinia.

Fantastic tour, Levina. I just clicked myself stupid with so many "likes".
The paintings are food for my soul and the rest too...I wish I could hop on a plane and just fly over again. One day for sure :)
Thank you for sharing these treasures.

If you get a chance look for "De avondschool" by Gerrit Dou. I particularly enjoyed it because he painted it with 4 different light sources and the way the light plays over the scene is an amazing example of his skill as a painter.

I used my Fuji X-100s at the Rijksmuseum.

Thanks very much, Clare. Lighting is pretty bad indeed...

Yeah, I hear both you and Clare. I wish I had a 5DIV so I could have underexposed two stops and pull up the shadows later, but unfortunately all I have is a 5D classic.

I missed De Avondschool. Like I missed so many things. I have seen the painting long time ago and remember it being Rembrandt-esk in its lighting? Unless I'm thinking of the wrong painting. I do know that Dou and Rembrandt were contemporaries and if memory serves me right I believe Dou was one of Rembrandt's pupils even.

I've got a 5D3 now which is far better in low light than my 7D was. I noticed the difference when I shot two bands in low light.

You did very well with a 5D in low light.

One thing I found from the Cairo museum, is that you never know exactly how well (or otherwise) shots are going to turn out, so best take as many as practically possible & try to do your best work. You also never know when photography in such a place is going to change from being welcomed, to banned....

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

That's so very true, Joeseph! Some shots that I thought would be rubbish turned out pretty well when others that I expected to be good, were not. Of course it was the first time I shot in a museum. If I were to go again, I would have a better idea of how to do it, what to look out for. But Nifty needs to move on this week, Monday a week at the latest. I'm playing with the thought of another visit to the Rijks to a) reshoot a few things (that I haven't posted yet) and b) shoot a few things that I hate to not have shot at all. We'll see.

Anyway, in case you all wondered what happened to the daily dose of Art, well, I heard the call of the wild: birds. So I've been shooting birds and processing Nifty shots is on hold for a short while. Besides, I thought you would welcome a short break from all the art. 8-) And I didn't forget Nifty altogether because when I went to the countryside today, I took Nifty with me.

Before anybody says: pictures or it didn't happen!, here are some shots I took at the countryside yesterday. I didn't take more than these, I mean, there's not much to see beyond what these show: flat land, low horizons and vast skies. Goes straight to a Nederlander's heart, but must be really boring to all others...

First my favourite Nifty shot of the day. It's migration season and all the geese that came to spend the winter here, are leaving, they're migrating north, to their breeding grounds. The Netherlands has the largest population of geese in Europe. We get some 15 different species of geese here, from the well known Barnacle goose, Greylag goose, Greater white-fronted goose, to the Snow goose, the Bar-headed goose to even the Canada goose. Some breed here too. In any case, migrating geese right now fill the skies with their thousands and tens of thousands. It's quite a sight.

By the way, that's a couple of Great Crested Grebes in the water. :-P

And a Dutch landscape with huge power towers/lines. Doesn't get any better for me. I saw groups of Mute Swans everywhere.

I always pass these on my way home and now stopped and took a shot. We call them "volkstuintjes" which would be allotment (gardening) in English. Here's a Wikipage on it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allotment_(gardening (external link))

They're basically gardens away from home so city folk can leave the city and spend time in nature.

Taken on the Schellingwouder bridge. This is the view towards the city. A pano of course.

A narrower view of the same and also the last shot I have. Next time it will be art again!

These are wonderful, Levina. I know the concept of gardening allotment from my home country Poland. Some of my friends have the most charming gardens away from the city where they spend time and put a lot of love into their gardens :)
Thanks for sharing.
