Today I (hopefully) got to save the life of a great horned owl. Stopped at a local lake to shoot the herons in the fresh snow when I noticed a red tailed hawk sitting unusually low in the tree and staring at the ground. Soon it jumped down and started to attack a grounded owl I hadn't noticed. The owl wasn't moving much, so I chased off the hawk and approached slowly to find the owl essentially bound to a tree branch by a huge ball of fishing line. Several hours later, with the help of a few others, the owl is with the Animal Rescue League of Pittsburgh and hopefully on the mend.

Good job on saving the Owl from the fishing line. Hope it makes a full recovery and is soon released back into the wild.

Edit: BTW...Great captures.

Poor lil guy. I'd like to think that the owl and the hawk are friends and that the haw was trying to save him :-D

Thanks everyone for the comments. Just followed up with ARL. They say he's doing well, free of the fishing line, and being treated for swollen wings and a possible concussion. Otherwise, he's in good health and has perked up since coming in on Friday!

Good news on the progress of this Owl and thanks for stepping in and making a difference. When I "rescue" a bird whether it's a Crow, Gull or a Chickadee some people tell me it's just another bird. They will never understand why people do those little acts of kindness.
