Oh man, I'd love to have that flying over my house all day. What a photo op!

I live in Southern California, about 4 miles from Van Nuys Airport. Back in the 80s & 90s, they held
the Van Nuys Air Show every summer. The day before and the day after the show, aircraft of all types
would fly over or near my house. It was pretty cool. Sadly, I wasn't into photography back then.

Btw, it's now called the Commemorative Air Force...

So much easier to do this today with all the advances in photography and electronics. My dad was very into RC Aircraft and we tried this at the model club back in the early 70's. The problem back then was the fact that one was limited to firing only a single frame on each flight, there were no cheap compacts with auto winders back then. SLR's with auto winders were also top of the range, so expensive and generally too heavy to make a viable payload. Oh and of course that the vibration from something like an OS .61 up front limited viable shutter speeds too. Fun experiments but not particularly viable for anything serious.

I began flying Sailplanes back in the late 70's and other than taking a few years off I have been since.. I gave power planes a try in the mid 80's, but did not enjoy it like I did sailplanes. Plus they were very limited on flight time and speed..

I fixed a cheap Fuji film camera with a built in winder in the mid 90's and used a servo to take the shots from the ground.

Here's the video the top still was taken from. Looks like a smudge on the lens I didn't notice until I downloaded the file.

Another out over the sound/ocean.. between 1000-1500'. Thee plane carries a altimeter and GPS that transmits to my radio and give me voice updates of air speed, altitude, distance from me and records the entire flight and I can download it to my computer and pull up Google earth and it shows my flight path in 3D.
