I shot this photo of a female snail kite with my 7Dii and a borrowed Canon 600mm f4. Holy crap is all I can say. But what a beast to lift up and shoot with handheld and from a boat, no less!!!! The IQ is magnificent compared to the 100-400ii enlarged to the same size, with or without the TC. Cropped about 75% or so.

That is just amazing. I would love to get close to an oyster-catcher. They are such interesting birds.

Maybe it's not fair of me to anthropomorphize, but I do like seeing devoted bird dads!

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Excellent shot Ed, if I had it in my budget I'd give up my 500 and get the 600 II without hesitation.

I'm waiting for the 600 DO to come out. The 500 II is eminently hand holdable and I don't want to give that up, even though the extra 100mm is seductive. But yeah, the 500 and 600mm are works of art.

Thanks much Annie, they're a bit nervous but approachable using a slow crawl. I was luck with this pair, their chicks were just a day or two old and as long as I stayed back they were calm. One of the chicks came right over to me (within arm's reach) and stared at me me for a while. Then it went back to it's parents, that's when I was able to get this shot.

:) Me too, this dad was keeping a close eye on things but didn't get alarmed. I was very still and quiet.
