Impressive collection of pictures here - it really shows what you can do with this lens!

I'm quite tempted to buy one. What about the sharpness at the MFD at 3 feet with 400mm? Is the lens still as sharp as when you would use it for action further away? I'm asking because I owned the 70-300mm L which was quite soft when using it at or near MFD with 300mm - while it was producing quite sharp images at longer distances. The same fact applies for the 70-200mm 2.8 II.

What are your observations?

I think the sharpness is very good at MFD. Here are two examples. The 1.4x III was attached for both shots.

Depends. Sometimes I get what appear to be real good results, whereas at other times I am disappointed. There are reasons they make macro lenses.


Pentax Spotmatic F with 28/3.5, 50/1.4, 50/1.8, 135/3.5; Canon digital gear
