A few shots from next to the mirror house in (Doug Aitkens Mirage) in Palm Springs. Shot with the Canon 17-40L while trying to work a reflector at the same time. We were really hoping to get there early on a workday to "beat the crowd". We didn't realize it didn't even open until three thirty and was already packed when we got back there. Oh well, the location itself is great so we decided to grab some traditional portraits, without a giant shiny house in the background.

Great environmental portraits. I'll bet there's still a lot of snow to be seen on that side of Mt. San Jacinto as well. As for the colors, I'd say it's the greens that could be pulled back a little rather than yellows. I can post a quick edit I did as an example if you'd like.

looks like a tough situation for the skins with the sun very heavily backlit. You did well with the reflector, figure you were using a flash. The rocks blend in very nice, almost didnt notice them, looks like great fun. Hope to go to the flower fields in carlsbad this year and get some nice shots. Blue reflector instead?

I'd love to get a "cool silver" . I normally don't use the reflector part of my 5-1, rather I just use the diffuser overhead to cut harsh mid day light. Right now though I'm thinking it's time to get a small bare bulb flash and a rapid box and just keep the strapped to my backpack. At least then everyone won't be squinting all the time.

The problem is that when zoomed it the skin tones are just where they need to be. I use a CMYK formula to balance skin for prints and the values ended up mostly where they needed to be. They're just getting swallowed up by all the other yellows in the scene.

Love that single sailboat in the picture. I bet with a 10mm lens it was a lot nearer than it looks like on the picture!

sailboats, even paddle boarders were pretty close, 70mm

Were you aiming the reflector down? Most people hold them incorrectly aiming from below. It creates weird shadows. You can try having them close their eyes and then when you have the reflector where you want, have them open their eyes and fire the shutter.

Great location for these portraits.

I was having them close their eyes and open on my count, the issue here is that, being on the side of a mountain, I'm below them, and trying to hold up the reflector while also triggering the camera. It's a delicate art.

how about bare flash camera left? I would hate to use a softbox at a windy location.

Have an 85GM in hand...didn't know it was aperture control on lens...I kinda like that...its a beast of a lens too...can't wait to use it.

I'm going to save up for one or see what the 135 looks like.

I really like the aperture control on the lens. Yes the lens is wide but not as heavy as I thought.

Do you guys ever have GAS in your dreams? Woke up this morning from a dream where I had convinced myself to buy the FE 50mm f/1.4 ZA. Totally crazy...now I want it in my wakefulness (my FE 55mm 1.8 is plenty good)!

Argh...I'll say this: between the Batis, Loxia, Sony Zeiss, and Sony GM there are an awful lot of native lenses to wish for now. I do wish I could have all the native f/1.4s (35, 50, and 85), plus all the Loxias, and I still love my Batis lenses too.

Really looking forward to the 16-35mm GM to see if they can replace my wide Batis lenses. Probably not - not getting my hopes up there.

Yes, I rented the 85. I need one for my portrait work and am not happy with the EF 85 f/1.8 adapted...was going to go the B85 route, I like what Eddie does with his, but Carlo and his recent 85GM wedding images made me reconsider...add in his opinion of the B85 and oof highlights...I shoot that look a lot so it was heard loud and clear...I love aperture on lens..i have fubared a few shots by scrolling the aperture wheel instead of shutter speed...so i like it.
