You must have certain privaledges to be able to get so close to so many loveley aicraft, airfields dont just let you walk about so close unless its an airshow or suppervised, unless your just very lucky;-)a

P.

If you can get along to some of the smaller light aviation airfields they will very often be very accommodating, if you ask nicely. A few years ago I visited Sywell with my son and we had a drink in the hotel, which is a very nice listed art deco building. They were quite happy to give us the number for the gate so that we could have a walk around the hanger area, without escorts either. I also remember back in the early 80's that the Airship Industries airship, I think it was the A500 which was the same one used in one of the Roger Moore Bond movies, was moored at Stapleford Abbotts airfield in Essex. I spotted it while driving past with my dad and we pulled into the airfield to have a look. There was still some ground crew with it and we managed to blag a look on board. Could probably have blagged a flight on it, but at the time it was still experimental, and so was not licensed to carry passengers.

When it comes to the smaller places being friendly and interested usually counts for quite a lot, even today. Most private pilots are always happy to talk about their aircraft to anyone who is interested. I usually find that going to a small airfield and visiting the "club" is the best way forwards. If nothing else it usually overlooks the apron, so you can sit and have a tea or coffee and watch the planes for a while. The bigger more commercial fields are where you start to have problems with access.

+1. If you can "prove" you know aircraft and are not looking to cause mischief, you'll be welcomed at most small, uncontrolled airfields. Go into the local FBO, flight school, or maintenance shop and be friendly. From there you may find someone willing to let you go walk around. As you walk around, if you see someone hanging out at their hangar talk to them. It's not infrequent that you'll be offered a ride.

Constructive criticism is always appreciated.

Big shows: The guys around there think that "early access" means 9AM. I've tried several times to be allowed to shoot at dawn or dusk at the Yankee Air Museum & only hit the wall of oxygen deprivation from talking to a wall of disinterest. These are the guys that let their hanger/museum burn down without having insurance on it.
I've also talked & emailed the people from Selfridge Field with the same non-result.

OTOH, a few years ago a small airport in the middle of Michigan had a day/night air show scheduled, so I walked in & asked if I could have access. I offered my images in return & they gave me an all access t-shirt & turned me loose. Lotsa' fun, some nice images, & a experience totally unlike the big show near Detroit that I used to go to.

Took this in 1990 just a couple of weeks before Operation Desert Storm so I have always called it "The Calm Before the Storm". Not a great scan though....

Very nice shot, not too keen on the rather intrusive watermark ;-)a
